Hi,

I just got back from a mates place who keeps spiders and scorps when i got over there he showed me a infested cat food box ( dry food ) covered in mites assoon as i saw this i paniced knowing i keep reptiles and said that i had to leave because of the saftey of my own reptiles. On the way out i looked where the box was sitting last and all in that area was just 10-30,000 of them all over the dvds cat little box and just everywhere.

When i got home i knocked on the door getting my mum to get me a garbage back and she did and went back inside. I stripped off down to nothing and put all the cloths into the bag and tied it up really tight. After i did all that i went straight into the shower and had it as hot as i could stand ( almost boiling no cold ) and washed myself 3 times.

Once out of the shower i got changed i then went to my reptile supplies and got this mite spray ive had for months just incase. Ive neva had mites before so im really stressing. Once i got the mite spray i went back outside and sprayed all my things that werent in the bag like phone, keys, torch and my backpack i covered the backpack in the spray almost half a bottle on just that. The bag is still outside and will stay out there untill the morning.

What i need help with is first.

Is there anything i should of done also to make sure i didnt have any on me i also used a reptile hand wash before coming back inside. And im not touching my animals for days unless i absolutly have to.

And second, How can i help my mate with this infestation what do you do if there through the house all over im not going over there again untill he gets it under control cant risk my reptiles love them to much.

If anyone can help id really love it.

Thanks,

Josh

Probably nothing to worry about as it is doubtful that they would be reptile mites. It is only the reptile mite that you need to worry about. Looks like you took plenty of precautions though.

Are you sure they weren't weavles?

Spray them and get rid of the box. Might be difficult if he keeps arachnids though. There are heaps of different types of mites.

I'm with you, get him to check any rice, oats or grain containers he has if they're in there they're mites... I'm pretty sure they get into cat food to.
