My jungle python has just laid eggs and i have no idea what to do.. she is wrapped around them now and they seem too look fine.. do i need to get an incubator asap?? do i leave her to do it?? please tell me what to do. Freaking out!!

Your python can incubate them until you figure out what to do, so don't freak out yet. If she wasn't prepared to breed I'd be inclined to get yourself an incubator (you can make a DIY one) to finish the job.

That's as far as I can help, but I'm sure you'll get some responses from those with more experience soon.

How much weight does she have on her? If she isn't in decent nick it can be risky leaving her to maternally incubate as they lose a lot of condition doing so. If you can get an incubator I'd advise it. If its only a few eggs you obviously don't have to hatch them if you're completely unprepared. Just make sure when/if you relocate the eggs they are facing the exact same way as they are when you take them off her and don't take them until the incubator is set up and tested! And taking eggs of a jungle... maybe buy a box of bandaids first . Good luck!

Yeah I have got to try and sort out an incubator today. She is around all her eggs and I can't see how many she has so I'll try and see tonight. Any advice on an incubator ??

Can I ask why you are so unprepared?

I have been wondering the same myself, not just abut this thread but there have been lots popping up saying "woops I didnt know my .......... was gravid and now I have eggs".. it seems to me that if you had opposite sexes together than you would be prepared for eggs?

Jungle juice I am in no way having a go, just interested in how it happens without ppl being aware, cos to me it seems like there are alot of signs to show that eggs are on their way...

It happends , I have had a few snakes drop this year I diden't even notice where knocked up... someone pointed out my olive is about to lay last night , oops missed that one...

Just leave the eggs with mum , you have 6 or so weeks to read up on how to get the babys feeding or to find someone who knows what to do to take them off your hands... good luck , no point freeking about it.

You can get eggs from snakes you didn't expect, sometimes its not completly obvious. But you would generally prepare for eggs if you've been trying, which I what I think Ramsayi is reffering to.

But you have to have put them in with a male at some point dont you? Or can they retain from the previous year? Sorry I know, totally Newb questions, at this point I havent even thought about breeding.

Sorry, what I meant was, if you've been trying (pairing them up and they've been copulating, or even if you haven't seen them) you can still get eggs when after months of introductions you thoguht you weren't going to get eggs because the female may not look gravid, or it may not be obvious she is. In which case either way, if you've been trying to breed them, you should atleast be prepared if they do lay eggs, dispite you thinking they may not.

So many signs along the way from mating, follicle development, ovulation and prelay shed.Leading up to laying females tend to act differently, getting themselves in weird positions, coiling tightly, looking decidedly restless and uncomfortable etc.

as a complete newbie to the snake breeding world, i can understand how it can be missed,..i know my diamonds mated this year, ive read the doc rock articles from start to finish 1000 times and i still have no idea,... (i put them together to get my boy to eat, not cos i wanted eggs,....i thought it was too early, but now i dont want to feed her incase she is gravid and wont digest it)

ive read what to look fro, but i dont know if im looking right,....shes been looking at me like she wants something for about 2 weeks now, so ive been picking up her rear end expecting her to tense up,..or have a pre lay shed, or something, but all seems to be in order,...
excpet for the way shes looking like she wants something, but isnt making it clear what,...

i'll put a nesting box out with her when i get home, just incase, cos im baffled by her new weird behaviour,...

If you are pairing up snakes in anticipation to breed then you should have the necessary equipment to make sure it goes smoothly. The next post will be, all my pythons are hatching, what is the best/cheapest way to house them all...etc etc. All this should be taken into account before you think, oh buggar it, lets just see what happens and worry about it if they happen to get gravid.

Chris1, don't get worried about offering a feed to your diamonds, as long as they have heat they will still digest it. Where the apparent issue is with feeding whilst gravid comes from, is if you feed large prey sized items, they can fill the intestines with fecal matter and therefore make it harder to poop/lay eggs due to the added 'volume' in the lower part of the body towards the cloaca. However if you offer a small meal instead, this will cause no problems at all.

great, thanks Hugsta, part of me is thinking the looks shes giving me are 'you havent fed me for ages' looks,...but shes not hanging out in ambush position, just being very interested when she sees me an actively making her way to the door of the aviary,...shes never been interested in me before, which is why this is weirding me out.

in the doc rock article it mentioned a gravid female dying from food rotting in her tummy,...regardless of how much heat they provided the lump stayed and she died after about 3 weeks,.....i know ive read plenty of times that people feed small meals to gravid pythons tho. So i'll offer her something small on the weekend (and bring her inside for perfect basking temps)

Thats what I was saying.

Yeh I have read that, doesn;t sit with me though. I mean, a snake will regurge a meal if cannot find the warmth do digest it, not saying it can't happen, it just doesn't make sense. I would imagine there would have been an underlying problem that aided in the death of the animal and the food may have been a side effect from this. JMO

Yes, I was agreeing with you, just with some added details. :D:D

I had a surprise clutch of blackheads this year. Male and female were only together for 1 night and I never intentionally cooled them. I believe with the cage design the female chose to cool herself and male has super sperm. I actually thought my female was sick and got her checked out 4 weeks before laying and vet said she had RI. They actually noted she may be slightly overweight haha.

Gave her antibiotics and all than saw her laying eggs one night. I didnt notice any size difference until after the lay as i was intending to breed her up until I was meant to cooler her. Decided not to though due other commitments. So she was nice and plum anyway.

Whaked up the incubator out of the fridge and stuff i did have laying around to make one and now have 5 out of the 11 eggs which will hopefully hatch next week. And my female is nice and health eating like a champion.
