We are mounting a fight to prevent a company called Cape Alumina P/L gaining mining rights in the Wenlock River Basin & the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.
The Wenlock River is described by Professor Craig Franklin as "...an ecosystem that doesn't fit under any classification."
It is home to 75 species of birds, 16 species of amphibian and 25 species of reptile, inlcuding the endangered Red Goshawk, Palm Cockatoo, Speartooth Shark & Spotted Cuscus.
The Wenlock River has the greatest diversity of freshwater fish of any Australian River.
Cape Alumina (who are 17.5% Chinese, 17.5% American, 25% Eastern European and only 40% Australian owned) plan to:
~ dig up 8 - 12 million tonnes of ore per year over 10 - 15 years
~ draw 230 litres of water per second from the Wenlock River
~ build a port at Port Musgrave, that would include dredging Port Musgrave and knocking down mangroves (Instead of using an existing port facility at Weipa)
We are building support to petition the QLD Govt. against giving mining rights to Cape Alumina and to gazette the Wenlock River as a wild river under the Wild Rivers Act 2005.
To do this we need your support, please join us on Facebook as a show of support, by clicking the link on our homepage at www.SaveTheWenlock.com
Your support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
