I don't think anyone knows the mode of transmission for sure, but it is likely through direct contact with infected snakes/enclosures or from mites that have been in contact with infected snakes.

There has been a case in Townsville, I Have only 1 snake.

No one knows how long the incubation phase might be - it's viral, comes from exposure to other infected snakes or husbandry gear that has been used with infected snakes, but that could be months or even years before symptoms arise. It also takes a significant amount of pathology to diagnose - can't be done prior to death - so if your snake is still alive, you cannot say it has IBD, because the symptoms are similar to many other disorders.

If anyone has further info about it, then could they post the details? As far as I am aware there is no IBD in Australia although twor three isolated cases in the past I am aware of. The longer it stays out the better.
Just to clarify the latest research (July 2012) seems to indicate it is an arenavirus. For pythons they will normally be dead in less than a month, it is rapid and fatal. Boas however can carry the disease which is one reason overseas many keepers will either keep Boas or Pythons but not both. As mentioned diagnosis even PM is difficult and uncertain and there are a number of other disorders than can cause similar symptoms. It is a very nasty disease, probably misdiagnosed more often than not and does create a fair amount of hysteria, but either way it is not something to joke about.
