I had my adult MD out in the loungeroom last night, and she decided it was the perfect opportunity to defecate on my bright red, synthetic rug! Normally I would clean poo up with bleach, but obviously I can't do that with my rug. It's a really big, heavy rug too which can't go in a washing machine. Any suggestions? I was thinking I should just take the rug outside and hose it down with washing detergent, but not sure if there's a better/more hygenic way.

Have you ever heard the expression "stuck like ____ (poop) to a blanket? Well a rug isn't much different. Your only real option is to get a professional carpet cleaner in and have a go at it.

Thats what I did. But I did it straight away so it just washed off. leaving it a while might be a bit different.

It's a really thick pile rug so hosing might just make it impossible to carry back upstairs or dry in a reasonable time frame. Might leave it to the dry cleaners :p Didn't even think of the dry cleaners to clean rugs!

If you can leave it outside to dry, sunshine will help disinfect. Also, I don't know if its available there, but Folex or Simple Green work well.

Try making up a paste of Bi-carb soda and water, rub it into the poop/stain and allow it to dry, when it is dry give it a bit of a rub with a stiff brush and vacuum it up, it should come clean :) ..............Ron

You could try a steam mop? I use it for snake poop and oil stains on my carpet.

Regular old windex cleans carpet and walls perfectly for me! No snake poop at our place but plenty of baby poo/play doh/general kid dirt!

Windex won't bleach my synthetic, bright red rug?

I couldn't be sure but I don't see how it would, have only ever used it on brown carpets but never had any issue with that. Also use it on couches and mattresses, painted walls, wallpaper and blinds :)

I use the clear one, not the blue one.

Thanks everyone, I ended up leaving it in the sun for a bit, then using Sard wonder soap (was told it's better than bicarb and won't ruin the colour). Dry cleaners said they don't do large rugs, only carpets and smaller rugs.
