Can anyone tell how to change from feeding mice to rats.I have 1 female bredli yearling she is a pig never refuses a feed and two high yellow n black jungles and they wont touch rats.Any help or ideas would be great thanks

pet shops sell mouse pheromone see if your local pet shop has any or see if you can buy some online or get a rat and a mouse and rub the mouse all over the rat, I mean every inch of the mouse even get a live mouse to use to rub all over the rat, it worked for me now my 5yo coastal eats rats like there is now tomorrow.. Good luck.

I've always found the easiest way with a lot of young pythons is to give them their usual mouse then hand feed a rat just as they are taking the last mouthful of the mouse.9 out of 10 times they will just continue on.

Rats

Hi,

Normally what i do to switch them over is make them wait 1-2 days longer for food so they are a little bit hungrier.

Then defrost a mouse and a rat (make sure they are nice and warm when offering, then rub the mouse all over the rat as this will put some of the mouse scent on the rat (yes it will smell like rat&mouse but as long as there is some mouse scent it will work) and offer as normal.

I have done this with every animal i own and i have had them eating the rats first go. (Every keeper will be different)

Cheers

make sure the rat is small too. A lot of times they get intimidated when the size of the prey item is much bigger than they are used to

One theory I read in "Keeping Aussie Pythons" was to store (frozen) your mine and rats together, the rats will then pick up mouse scent (keep in the same bag of course) and will help. I'd be combining this with warm scenting and possibly a double feed (mouse followed by rat) from the same bag, just make sure they're a little smaller so as not to over feed the little' un.

Obviously I'm just combining all the techniques above, but if this works you can then drop off one step each time you feed until it's just straight Rat :)

Thats what I do too. Usually I only need to do that once and the next feed they will take the rat straight away.

what i did for my swcp is freeze a rat and a mouse in the same bag and defrost them together this gives the rat a mouse scent .thats how i fooled mine lol:)

I've got numerous stubborn jungles. I've found the most successful method is to brain a mouse and rub the brains of the mouse all over the nose and head of the rat before offering. I've found this to have close to 100% strike rate.

I have done the same with 2 different snakes and works all the time

While I'm no expert, my Bredli switched without any problems at all.

Without thinking about it, I keep the mice and rats together in the freezer and whenever I thaw the food out I put them in the warm water together (have 2 snakes, one on mice).

Maybe try these things and see how you go.

well success tried rubbing the mouse all over the rat and bang they loved it thanks again to all that replied thanks again

You can also tie the rat to a mouse with a SMALL piece of white cotton, so that they start eating a mouse and just carry on to the rat, after a while you dont need the mouse

I do this un-intenionally. cos of the different sizes of my pythons

Using the search function is great, just the question i was going to ask! Thats every1 for the input!

Just to add, from my limited experience.

My Jungle hatchie had been on mice for 6 feeds, and the first time I offered a rat of the same size bang. No worries swapping. She was left for the same duration between feeds.

I can only assume I have gotten lucky!
