Hi, I have a spare enclosure and instead of selling it I'd like to see if I could keep a frog in it. it's (i'm guestimating) 400-450 high 300-350 wide and probably 200-350 deep.

I'd love to keep a frog but I have no idea HOW to keep a frog (heating? food? setup?), any info would be much appreciated..

Thanks, Tahnee

Are those measurements in mm or cm??

Does the enclosure have walls and a roof on it? And if so are they all glass or wood or mesh?

Frogs need moisture, so humidity is important. So heating of some sort, usually with water and a water heater is the easiest way.

They need UV, so a globe is needed too.

Um...probably need more info on the enclosure before I can give any more help.

in mm sorry. glass sides back and bottom, plastic and mesh roof, sliding glass doors that don't go all the way to the bottom so i guess it can hold some water? haven't tested it.

The info will depend on what species you are, looking at keeping.

That size enclosure would suit many species of frog.

The same rules apply as for reptiles i;e get the enclosure temps and conditions as close to their natural climate as possible.

As a general rule, frogs need UV (or at least benefit from it to some degree), humidity, water, perches (arborial) and land / burrowing area (terrestrial). Most of the commonlty kept captives prefer a temp of 20-26 degrees, with the more tropical species prefering it a tad hotter. the way i achieve my temps is a uv fleuro at the top and an aquarium heater in the water. This also increases the humidity levels.

If you have any idea of what species of frog u are looking at let us know, and you will get some more specialised advice from myself or others. Also check out the care sheets sections of frogs.org community.

I LOVE the baggy skinned looking green tree frogs, the ones that I've seen in our yard are about the size of my palm. Or a red eyed green tree frog. Also, do they make alot of noise in captivity? I hadn't thought of that lol.

I haven't really seen any other types of frogs though.

I keep Green Trees and Red eyes.

For the green trees i use 1/3 water and 2/3 land. Sectioned with a siliconed piece of glass. I don't heat the GTF's though. I use a 2.0 UV fleuro, live plants in tropical platation soil topped with reptile bark.

The Red Eyes are ina 2/3 water and 1/3 land tank with heating and the same story as above.

I use lots of perches in both enclosures as well.

Both of these species can be loud, but no worse than the average dog.

Check out the show us ya frogs thread for as look at some good enclosures.

Theres plenty out there.

I keep 5 different species. I have had up to 7 species but got rid of 2 of em.

Just need to keep your eyes open.

lol wow, I prefer the green ones... well any green coloured ones. I think I'll haveto do a google image search for aussie frogs then. But basics are temp, moisture/humidity, UV and water-land ratio. yes?

Yeah I have Green Tree Frogs. They are great!! Funny to watch especially as the lights are going down and the food goes in. The boys can be noisy as they call for girlfriends. My fiance wants to kill my boy sometimes as it can get loud.

I've attached a photo of one of my older frogs sitting on my babies small enclosure, can see a baby there too.

Mine love hiding under the leaves of plants, and usually just sticking to the glass walls. I have fake vine in there but they usually only use it to chase crickets climbing on it. But I suggest using bigger washed river pebbles. They're a lot easier to clean.

Do the females get loud? and how often do they call? If it's just within a breeding season timeframe it'd definately be ok.

and your frog is gorgeous, the exact one I'd like to get.

Yeah the girls sometimes make noises (a friend told me) but it's usually during mating season and it's usually a call back to the boys, and it's not very loud. My bigger frogs aren't very old (maybe 4-6 months) and I'm not sure when mating season is, as my friend has frogs mating all the time. But I have one frog I'm guessing is a boy, who calls every now and then. Not sure how many of them are boys, but I suppose I'll find out soon enough.

The females don't generally call, they can scream pretty loud though.

for my green tree and white lipp, i just use an aqaurium heater and fill the tank so its covering the heater by a few cm. set the heater to about 28-30 degrees. also use repti-glo 5, and the decorations are up to you, natural or fake plants look good plus some logs and branches
ive heard my frogs call a few times but thats it wasnt to loud either.
its just luck some will call all the time where others barely make a peep.
also im pretty sure its only males that call/croak.
good information and care sheet, http://frogs.org.au/arc/caresheets.html
