:|So...i need a bit of advice...
we have two dogs and one of them was barking, so i went out to see what it was barking at and it was barking at the other dog trying to kill a blue tongue in our back yard. i went to stop it and grabbed the blue tongue (who was alive and doing its best to defend itself against two huskies) to see what damage had been done. What she (the dog) had managed to do was cut it open on its belly and some if its intestines had come out the cut was probably about a inch wide but there was about 5cm or so worth of intestines that had come out and was internally bleeding, we have tried to stop the bleeding and pushed the intestined back through with a tissue and some tape around its belly to hold it all together. he/she is currently sitting in an old fish empty fish tank to hopefully recover. but as i have never had to resuce an injured blue tongue before i was wondering if there was anyone had some advice on what to do with the little fella? or what to do in this situation? we have plenty of reptiles as pets so it would be good is there is something we can do to get him back to health and let him go back to living in his life.

thanks...sorry for the longness

Dont get your hopes up as a wildlife recuer most case's are not ending happily with this case bluies are extremely hardy animals but if its intestines are out of it's body and filling with blood it will not last long (I hope i am wrong) you need to get it to the VET asap in the meantime try close the wound with some gauze and bandage and use some betadine to help prevent infection and clean the wound.

its not his intestines that are bleeding, its his cut that is bleeding, we have used betadine and wrapped a bandage around him and he is in the tank, he is moving around and very agitated when went to go to check on his wound (as you would be).

as aaron said im sad to say this but intestines coming out that isnt a good sign poor blue tounges they love backyards but back to subject def wrap bandage around it and make sure nothing is coming out of his butt like blood but youll probably find great help at bluetoungeskinks.net wish you luck

thanks yea i know, we did a check to see if there were any others in the backyard so that no others have to suffer the same fate as this little guy. yeah well he did a poo and it was a very dark green colour (slightly runny), im not sure what that means. but he is all bandaged and moving around a bit and trying to get out. so we will just have to wait and see.

He needs Vet treament asap. With an injury like that he's gonna be in lots of pain and the secondary infection from the dog bite will set in very quick. Depending on which part of Bris you are in, you should get him to Currumbin Wildlife Vets or Australia Zoo Vets straight away. Alternatively you could call
WildCare 5527 2444 and get a carer to pick him up and get him to a Vet. In the meantime just keep him warm and in a dark room without noise. Give no food or water. Without Vet treatment he'll die a slow painful death.

Sammie-Leigh you should try to get in contact with "Helikoan" from this site he has saved a couple of blue tongues after dog attacks recently.

hi there,
thanks to everyone who replied to this thread it helped heaps, unfortunatley i wasnt able to get ahold wildcare and when i could they werent able to send someone out and i wasnt able to get him to a vet due to not having a car on the day but he is doing really well it has been almost a week now and he has started eating, we havent released him back into the wild yet because we want to make sure he is good health when we do. but he has made a speedy recovery, we werent sure if he was going to make it through the night but he has made it through the week and is doing really well.

just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted it helped a lot.
