Well, this story is simple - but I will take the long way round for telling it.

Of late I've been thoroughly enjoying the luxury of eBay and the ability to buy what ever I want at prices much much cheaper than I previously could if I bought them in shops here.

If I see electronic items on eBay I will first also use www.shopbot.com.au - this way you may actually find it cheaper outside of eBay.

Alright, that aside...

I've bought loads of stuff off eBay in the past two weeks from tents to hiking equipment - all of which can be bought in the shops right here - for at least 20% more than I purchased from eBay!

On top of that I didn't have to leave the house (not saying I am lazy) - which therefore meant I didn't use my car, which therefore meant I didn't use petrol, which therefore meant I saved money and the environment.

Or did I....?

Well, some of this stuff will be shipped to me via an aeroplane - is that worse?

But when I look at it - most of that stuff probably had to be shipped by aeroplane at one stage anyway.

So regardless - it was going to fly in.

Now today was the big day of total 'I can't believe I paid this much for this product for this long'!

I wear contact lenses

They're great - I love em! My optometrist showed me some awesome lens cleaning solution - she mentioned it was a little more expensive but thoroughly worth it blah blah - it was a hydrogen peroxide based solution.

Well - I went to buy some more today.. No one had any!

I drove all the way to town for that?

Well, not entirely I bought other stuff to...

So I decided just now, maybe that's something I can buy off the net - and low and behold a big multi-pack of the lens cleaning solution for about 40% less than I could have purchased it from up here at the optomertrist!!!

Not only that but I'd be saving $40 every 3 months if I buy my contact lenses from this place too!

How is it that - even when you add postage on you still save so much money off the internet???

I really can't get it... We're talking like 33% cheaper (all the time - not on sale or anything).

I've also purchased loads of stuff off the net for my reps as well, and found that to be considerably cheaper than the local pet shop.

So - are we being more carbon friendly by net shopping? We're certainly saving money!!!

Who's the ones who are losing?

I wished I had done this when I purchased my TV - I found it for $300 cheaper than I got it for from a big department/electronics store! I was gutted - though, I wonder what the transport costs would have been - maybe it would have evened out.

There are a lot of great bargans to be found over the net, although buying sight unseen can be risky, but I have had no first hand problems.
Freight costs are usually the killer

Off the top of my head i would say the 'sales assistants' that are employed by shops to help you and to check out your items....

They are no longer needed when you shop online... Atleast not as many!

Also could be the middle man.... If you purchase direct from bulk warehouses you cut out the middle man, therefore the 'retail' people are losing out as you are now buying wholesale....

Just my thoughts on the subject, basically anyway....

Also are they the same brands? cause there alot of products almost the same that come straight from the asian countries like hong kong...

So Matt - do you think we should pay more and just grin and bear this cost so we can keep unemployment lower?

You're probably right though - the retailers and sales assistants are probably going to cop it - but what is stopping them from having internet stores as well?

Yes, I believe they're exactly the same products.

No definitely not.... The world is moving forward, and if that means less sales assistants and retailers then so be it... Its a fact of life, things change.... Its just a sign of the times....

*Incoming rant:p* The thing about buying from the internet is you can't be sure you will receive what you pay for.. I've bought a few things from the internet, mostly herp related from sponsors of APS. I didn't have any trouble up untill my last purchase.. I paid everything seemed in order, a week went by and nothing so i emailed them and 'they missed my order' and it would be sent out the next week.. That week went by still nothing so again i emailed them and they 'happened to be out of town on business' all week so it would be sent the next week. ANOTHER week went by and nothing, but this time my emails weren't replied to and my order just happened to vanish..

So yeah it might be a bit more to buy in person but atleast i know i'm going to get the damn thing.

4 months ago i lived in the middle of nowhere (and no i don't mean Townsville :p a tiny town in CQ). The prices were astronomical of things you could actually buy in town, most things there just wasn't that option. Online shopping became my firend, i loved getting the little parcels, it was like xmas everyday

Now that i am somewhere where i can get most things i still shop online for certain things - bought a pair of Oakley sunnies - were $200 in store, $132 online (not dodgey ripoffs). Frontline is soooo much cheaper online than at a petstore (so much so that my mum is actually buying it online! she has a paypal account!:D). On big stuff postage is a killer, but look for the websites with flat postage rates.

There is the risk that you'll get gipped, and the extra stuff around with warranties (and having to post stuff back), so research the website. But other than that i am a happy online shopper.

(maybe i do have way too much spare time and a slight addiction to shopping...)

I think it also has to do with where i live - stuff up here is more expensive.

So now i can tell my hubby that i am being green too :lol::lol:
