Just wondering if people would like to document the legalities in purchasing / selling reptiles both intrastate and interstate for their particular state.

In SA we are required to keep a record book and when you purchase or sell a snake intrastate all we do is update the books with the other peoples details, just make sure the other party has an appropiate license. There are no fees.

For an interstate transaction, you apply for an import or export permit. You can download one here http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/fauna_permits/app_forms.html . If you are in a hurry you can drop it in and pick it up yourself, turnover, if you ask nicely, can be less than twenty-four hours. Again there are no fees.

Fuscus, in NSW we have the same system. We have a record book system with a page for each species. We have to update the book each time we transfer, export, import, births, deaths etc.

As for our Import/Export permits we either have to mail the application or fax it with a credit card number. Cost for each permit is $20. On average if you fax it to NPWS they take around 1 week to return the permit too you. I believe we can no longer collect at the counter as there is no longer a counter to collect from.

NSW NPWS are probably the slowest to issue these permits in Eastern Australia, and the most expensive, but its an improvement over the old days. As little as 5 to 6 years ago it took between 2 to 4 weeks for these permits to be issued, and often the corresponding permit from interstate would have expired before NPWS issued it.

Yeah if anyone has full instructions for qld that would be good as i have see many different ways of the movement advices beeing delt with. and am still not sure about the process.

Just a note on Import permits in NSW - If you call the NPWS 2 or 3 days after you fax it in, they have generally processed it (or can do it that day if you call early and ask nicely). They can give you the permit number, which is all the exporter needs in order to send the animals.

Also in NSW, you can ring up about 3 days after they've received it and they will give you the permit number over the phone. Funnily enough it goes through the financial department who take your money before it is actually approved

In Victoria you have to apply for an import permit which is F.O.C.
I have actually faxed an application in the morning and recieved my permit in the next days mail! Excellent service!! The longest I have had to wait for an import permit is approximately one week.
As for export permits I would imagine the same sort of thing applies but I have, as yet, not had reason to apply for one so can not say for certain on this. Most of what I have sold in the past has been purchased locally.

This thread has had an immediant effect. The seller of my new WP was able to get the number via phone and is sending Nancy tomorrow. Thanks Sam and Simon, what a team :)

Still waiting on submissions from WA, NT and QLD (and TAS, do we have any Tas members).

In QLD a record book needs to be maintained as well. Movement permits are now abolished for reptile keepers and a movement advice is used for all movements within QLD and interstate. They require no approval and I bought one for $2.50 from Naturally Queensland Office in Brisbane City the other day. The movement advice is designed for the "seller" to fill out and deal with. It is mutiple copy and the front page explains where each copy needs to go to complete the process.
To recap- Movement advices are used in place of permits for reptile keepers in QLD, eq.. a venomous reptile transaction from NSW to QLD now requires a movement advice, not a permit.
Movement Permits are reserved for "restricted wildlife" such as Koalas etc

Liberated, I agree with you. The M/A is designed for the "seller" to fill out, which means if you are buying from interstate you need to get a M/A and post it to the seller to fill out, literally meaning you do no paper work, and they do 2 times as much. I have however also seen people fill it out and send the copies around in the correct places as the QLD buyer. I have asked a few people from NPWS and I get a differnt answer from each one. Basically the M/A design hasnt changed to suit the changes in the regulations. From what I figure as long as the correct copies goto the correct places they dont know the difference, however technically speeking the front page of the advice states that the filling out and distribution of the M/A is done from the "sellers" end.

In W.A

A licensee authorised to export pet herpetofauna must, when lodging a report under regulation 12(1)(b) of the Wildlife Conservation (Reptiles and Amphibians) Regulations 2002, pay a fee of $150 plus $10 for each animal in excess of 5 exported under the licence.

Following the departure of the herpetofauna from W.A. you need to " lodge a report " together with the prescibed fee payment. This should be done as soon as possible after the animals have arrived at their destination as detailed on the export licence.

" Report lodgement " should detail exactly how many of each species actually left W.A., date of departure and confirmation of recipient. The fee payment as above should accompany this report.

The $30.00 per consignment fee on the import application page (to be paid at the time of applying) is separate to the fee on this page.

Alright craig, but in your opinion what pages go where: section 1,2,3 and 4? as i said i have heard all different ways of distribution. what is the correct way?

As far as I know there are no movements approved in or out of Tasmania.

What about transfering ownership of herps between one WA keeper and another WA keeper ?

Not allowed as yet. A private keeper may only sell to a licenced dealer. Only licenced dealers are allowed to sell to private keepers.
