I went camping at our block on the weekend and have previously seen scorpians and mouse spiders there so I thought I might search for one to keep as a "pet" so I can see what all the fuss is about with invertebrates. Anyway turns out I didn't find either but I did manage to catch a centipede which is about 7-8cm long with a dark back, orange belly and blue legs and I have decided to keep him. When I caught him I put him in a tub with insects I had found for the lizards and he immediately attached himself to a grasshopper and proceded to feast.
Anyway my questions are:
1) What is the scientific name for my little bundle of joy (the centipede)?
2) Is there a certain time of year when arachnids are more active when they are more easily found to collect? I still want a mouse spider and scorpian (I see the scorps fairly often but the mouse spiders will be the challenge)
3) What is the best way to search for mouse spiders? The last one I saw was in the open, on a track. But do they usually live in burrows, or under logs etc (I'll do my own research in a sec but just incase)
4) And last but not least can anyone give me the scientific name for the "huntsman" I took pics of?

... oh and enjoy the pics...

Redbacked Spider (there were lots of really big ones) with a small scorpian in its web.
Jewel spider (I think) by the side of the road.
My centipede with prey.
The unknown huntsman.
Some stumpies I came across while playing "bush golf," found 3 in total.

Cheers, jordo :)

nice pics. thanks for sharing. wish i found lots of creepy crawlys.

Dont know about the Sparassid, but the other is a jewel or christmas spider, Gasteracantha minax. As for the 'pede, do a search for Scolopendra.

Thanks Jordan,
I'm having trouble with the pede because I can't find much on the net but oh well.
