It was laid 18/8/11 and due around 6th November. But it kind of went really red where the marks are then dulled now with about a month to go. Whats going on and is it normal?
I had some go similar to that. Use a torch to candle, and see if their are any veins, that will give you a fair indication. Do it a few times, mine went well. I think it may happen from water drops, if the water heaps on the lid.
It looks as though the shell is calcium deficient. To candle, find a torch with minimal heat (LED ones are good) and shine it through the back of the egg to see the veins.
As Peppersgirl said, grab an LED torch, shine it from behind the egg to see if it has veins. If it does, put it back and let it keep incubating. If it doesn't, unfortunately the egg isn't viable and you'll have to throw it - don't open it up! dead eggs smell really bad! hah.
Make sure not to roll it at all when you candle it as you don't want to kill it if it is still viable.
Ok well the one that i put pics up of is maybe ok, so it might come through. I candled another set of 2 and when i got it out and one was very mouldy from underneath. So i got it out and the mould was really bad and held the vermiculite right from the bottom of the tub. So i tried gently pulling the vermiculite off, i got about to get half it off and the egg ripped open :'( I'm so sad I've lost 2 now. But the other 3 i candled are really pink so hopefully i will have 3 hatchies and she is gravid ATM.
But inside the egg was just a blob of meat really. It was laid 13/9/11 so one month through and I'm wondering how long until you can actually see the shape of the gecko?
Well just going by what I can see through candling, (and with a different species of lizard) it can take over a month to look remotely lizardish - appears to take a long time to develop to the point where anything is visible to start with.
