Hello all,

I have some Australian Red Eyed Tree Frogs set up in a terrarium. I am having an issue with the heater and the water pump which I use for a filter and waterfall to enhance humidity. I only turn the filter on once a day for a few hours, usually when the frogs are waking up (nocturnal). Lately, when I turn the filter on the heater turns itself off (electrical issue?) and is hard to get going again. I have a small fluval heater (about 10watts) and the filter is a cheap chinese brand from ebay but works really well and is quiet. Has anyone experience similar issues with heaters and filters?

The heater works really well usually, and only plays up when I turn the filter on.

Thanks

William

sounds like an electrical issue. thats the only way the filter could interfere with the heater. try a different power board or even a different power socket.

These guys sound correct, but is the temperature dropping?? if not then the water flow is spreading the temp better and the on board thermostat on the heater is turning it off.

Yeah sounds like the sudden surge of electricity from turning the filter on daily is triggering the heater's thermostat to turn itself off.

Try seperating both from the same power source.
Is there a reason why you can't leave the filter on 24/7?

Your actually better leavin the filter on 24/7, all you are donig is mechanical filtration.. You really need biological and without it being on it's not having a chance to set itself up and what bacteria does set itself up dies when you turn the filter off.

Just buy a new powerboard, it sounds like that one has had it, which is not a good thing to be using anyway.

Or maybe one of the frogs is fiddling with the heater knob...?

without it being on it's not having a chance to set itself up and what bacteria does set itself up dies when you turn the filter off.

i'm pretty sure the bacteria doesnt die when the filter is switched off, as long as it doesnt dry out i'd think the bacteria would be fine

The most beneficial bacteria are aerobic, and unless there is a high water turn over they die very quickly.
