Issues with shedding/eye problem

I know this thread has probably been done a million times, so apologies in advance, tried the search option but nothing specific enough came up. I have been holding off posting this, thinking that if I do, surely she will shed by the morning and she just doesn't.

It's been 17 days since my Woma started showing signs that she was going to shed. First thing I noticed was white around the outside of her eyes, since then dull scales, extra time in hide, rubbing her nose on things etc etc

17 days sounds quite excessive... I have read it can take about a week, maybe 10 days, but 17 days?

I have tried a few things over the last week, I let her swim around in some warmish water, I let her slither in some wet towels, there is a few rough things in her click clack that she can use. I thought maybe spraying water in the click clack but I decided against this with her being a woma... (?)

This will be her second shed, her first with me, and she is my first python so I am really new to it all, not quite sure what else I can do to help her :(

I dont know about womas but when my coastals having a bad shed I lightly spray her with a waterbottle and have a water container big enough for your woma to soak in and that should work

I've read a few things for and against spraying woma's so not sure about it.
I'll let her have another soak in some water tomorrow... does it matter the temp of the water? (I had it luke warm, I imagined she wouldn't like cold water...)

I should also add that her eyes are still the same, 17 days later, as they were in day 1, just milky white around the outside. I've read that they usually clear up right before the shed, so I am guessing I am still going to have to wait a bit longer?

(apologies again for a naivety)

Could be some form of infection if they have stayed that colour.
Strange though seeing as it is showing the rest or normal shed characteristics.

Michael

Here are a couple of pictures of her eyes, can't really get a good shot of what they are like, it's just whitish around mainly the outside of her eyes, I assume this is how they go when they are going to shed...

Is that how they've been the entire time? have they been 100% covered in white at any stage?

Just clarifying

Michael

coul be some kind of infection or something. Will wait for someone with more experience to come along cause this is as far as I can help you in that department :S

They normally go 100% white/milky. Looks like whitish catarachts(sp?) when approaching a slough.

On the other hand the photos don't really strike me as unusual from what I can see. You definately noticed a obvious change in your snakes eyes?

First things first, is she actually due for a shed? As in, when did she last shed, how long has she been with you and how many feeds and at what intervals has she had since her last shed?

Thanks, I'll see what other people say...

REALLY don't have the $$ for a vet bill for another 2 weeks, but I'll get it somehow if I need to.

in the meantime, off to google.

Yeah, she is, her scales are quite rough and can see they are a really dull colour, she is also quite wrinkly etc etc
Last shed was 17/12/10, she has been with me for 3 weeks, she's had 1 fuzzy per week since her last shed. I waited a bit longer to give her the last feed though, gave it to her on monday night and she ate it with no probs.

The closest thing I could find from google is this: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?89413-Something-white-on-her-eye&highlight=white%20sliver%20eye doesn't really help, picture looks the same, Lailah's is in both eyes though and they move with her eye, I can actually tell if she is looking at me.

Yeah, she didn't have eyes like that when I got her, developed them a few days later (not sure how many) and I just assumed it was part of the shedding process. But now I look more into it, it doesn't seem to be very common.

This might show it better? P1020286.jpg

I'm really starting to get quite worried now.. :(

I've made a vet appointment for her today at 2:30... Don't know where I'm going to pull $80 from

No one really seems to know what is up with her eyes, I've also contacted my friends dad who is a herpetologist who doesn't know either :(

_______

VERY VERY happy to report that the vet said she is all good. She is very healthy and in great condition, Lailah even did a poo while we were there so the vet checked that out too.

As for the eyes, she said she hasn't seen it before, but she thinks its anatomical and there is no sign of any infection etc, just to keep an eye on it. vet took a photo of it as well and asked me to call her in 2 weeks or when she sheds.

I'm stoked I went for the peace of mind =)

sounds normal for a snake thats on too small a food. Maybe up its food size if it's getting wrinkly, and give it a mist every couple of days. Slight mist. The eye's will ghost, and a week or so it will shed.

We talked about upping the food size, she said maybe a fuzzy for the next couple of feeds, then up it.

What size are pinkie rats in comparison to fuzzy mice?

Good to hear mate.

Always better to be safe than sorry.

Michael

Definitely!!

i believe the white around the eyes is normal both my womas are the same it has nothing to do with shedding.

How old is it ? i got my womas at about 5 months old and they were already on fuzzy rats never had mice i think fuzzy mice for a woma would be too small

Good to hear! Do they have it all the time? She didn't have it when I got her...

She is 2 months old, 60 grams and a rough estimate of 58cm long :)

Need to post a thread about rodent suppliers in Sydney actually, Vet asked if I was happy where I was getting them from and I said no, not sure where else I can go for them...

I'll also add that she takes about 5 mins tops to get the fuzzy mouse down, which made me lean towards maybe upping the size.

yeah you could maybe up the size or maybe feed 2 fuzzys a week. my womas are now a year old and are onto large adult rats lol

and yeah my womas have the white bit on the eye all the time i just believe its like the white bit on our eyeballs around the pupil

That's exactly what it seems like, I can actually see if she is looking at me or not by looking for the whites around the eyes.

It's just odd that she didn't have it when I got her and then it suddenly appeared. Will be interesting to see what happens to it after she sheds.

Good to know it's all normal then :) Thanks

I dont know if this will help, but when I used to keep budgies (little bit different, I know) the white ring development appeared as the animal matured (as baby budgies are born without them). I would hazard a guess that this is true for other animals as well?
