I‘ve noticed so many threads turn into battle of the keyboard warriors. It really gets old after a while. The reason we are here is to seek knowledge and share our passion for reptiles, so why spoil something good with petty bickering. I‘m not having a go at people trying to offer advice, but those that are clearly out to pick a fight. So many topics seem to get dragged off topic as one user attacks another user over methods and who is right and who is wrong. Cant we all just grow up a bit? Or at least make it interesting and throw in some jelly wrestling to determine who is “right“. Just my two cents :)

People with differing opinions often result in disagreement and argument. Call it “petty bickering” if you will. There are a number of reasons why this can happen. As you have suggested, some individuals are only here because they get their jollies out of picking a fight. These people are few in number and need to be reported to the moderators at every opportunity. Another reason for disagreements is much more valid – and that is the fact that there are many different successful ways to meet the needs of any given species.

I am not excusing rudeness or arrogance in any manner. They should be censured as they occur. Somewhere between the attitude of “I know it all” and I just want to pass on what I have learned, there should be useable information. It is the odd “I know it all!” attitude that can generate difficulties when it becomes apparent that they actually do not know it all. Someone with good experience and understanding can take this sort of person to task. Whilst it may seem an unnecessary argument, it is often important.

As Blue has stated ...

"These people are few in number and need to be reported to the moderators at every opportunity. "

If you see a problem either use the report button at the bottom of the offending post. Serial offenders are quickly noticed and dealt with accordingly.

I think heated discussions are healthy, it is usually when two passionate people have a difference of opinion and as long as they keep the name calling and disrespectful comments out it can be quite a learning experience hearing different reasons for different methods.

I think debate is healthy and I sometimes play devils advocate to stimulate thought. What I hate, is members giving wrong advice when they dont know what they are talking about. Unfortunately that wrong advise gets repeated and becomes an internet fact without being substantiated.
I dont notice a lot of rudenes but then again I skip a lot of the newbie threads.
Any arguement should be polite but not everyone is as eliquent or computer literate as others. I admit I have been scolded by Blue for my lack of diplomacy at times. ( If I knew how to I'd put a smiley face here) but that what comes from being challenged by computers.

And as long as they both have valid, tried and tested reasons for their opinions and not just "my mates cousin's boyfriend did this once and the animal didn't die so it's obviously the only method"

the jelly wrestling sounds good...or did you all miss that bit?? :p :p

So now you are calling us all unobservant losers :( back to NO name calling , (which one is the sarcastic emotive ????

I‘m not talking about when there are reasonable debates as I thoroughly enjoy different view points and obviously its great when people share different methods because its bound to help someone. But rather those that are fairly new or even people that have had snakes for years but dont really understand their husbandary needs, its these people that either ask or respond to questions and are rude know it alls of everything. So many people ask for advice then reject it and say things like well this relativr of my best friends neighbour told me to it this way so I will keep doing it this way. Well obviously its not working and when people give them decent advice they act all superior and have a go. Glad someone liked my jelly wrestling idea :)

I think APS has being fairly tame in recent times, something I can't say about some of the other forums. They seem to have more conflict and bs in the last few weeks.

This might come as no surprise but I enjoy a good debate :) That being said I don't appreciate it when people become offensive. For the most part here on APS I've found people are willing to engage in meaningful, adult conversation but when people start name calling and falling back to ad hominem arguments the conversation becomes less meaningful and more infantile. I've only ever been caught up in a couple of these arguments and almost always come off looking childish myself.

I think this platform is a fantastic way for similarly minded people to come together and knock out the better ways to manage our hobby and I enjoy being a part of that. Thanks to you all :)

I hate that I have to re read all my posts to make sure there are no flame worthy comments there. Kinda sucks, iv become more of an observer than a participant :(
