Does anyone know about licences for schools? Do they just need the normal Reptile licence or do they need a special one to be around children? My teacher wants to get a bearded dragon.
Cheers
Mark

If you are in NSW I can help - I'm a teacher and went through the process to keep a MD in my classroom. You need to contact the Schools Animal Care Ethics Committee run by the NSW Department of Education. You make an application to them and, if approved, you get a scientific license from the DECC. The process takes a couple of months. Teachers do NOT need to be individually licensed to keep reptiles, but there are questions about housing and handling, so you have to know what your animal needs. Teachers are allowed to take the animal home over school holidays to care for it. Although one teacher is the license holder for the school, you may have a few reptiles (all must be approved by the committee) and they can go to different houses during the holidays. The process must be repeated every year, but once you are approved, I suspect that renewal is much easier.

Yes, Parks and Wildlife should put your teacher onto the right people to apply for the scientific license. It just depends if they are answering the phone, etc. They may e-mail your teacher the forms, which will be helpful.
