Mary River Turtle

I just read in a post that the Mary River Turtle is endangered.
My next door neighbour has Two Mary River Turtles, she has had them for over 7-8yrs ( before we moved in next door) and they are big and beautiful. From what I have been told by them is that they were caught in the wild and they were only about the size of a penny ( hence the name penny turtle), well now they are really quite big and live in a 4ft or 5ft tank, the female has laid eggs before and my neighbour took them to a pet shop to hatch, but they said none survived ( whether that is true or not we won't know, not all petshops are honest) . Anyways the lady's daughter who bought them home over 7-8yrs ago ( not knowing any better at the time) is all grown up, is now a school teacher and is on leave traveling the world and her mother just can't care for them any more. They are to big and to much work.
Well she is looking for someone to take them, someone who will love and care for them. She did ask me, but I had already bought Tina and one Turtle is enough work and worry for me ( as most might know from my other thread).
To be honest, I am not sure if she wants money for them, or just to find them a new home. If anyone is Interested, please PM me. I do live in Brisbane so a local person would be better suited.
We all know that it is wrong to take animals from the wild, and it should never of happened, but it did and there is no going back, so please don't slam my neighbour for giving into her daughter who at the time neither of them knew any better.

They are doing great work with the Mary river turt .

Being wild caught your neigbour prob does not have them on licence, so it would be illegle to give them away to anyone on here.

Best bet to contact Craig.

i dont think they would be mary river turtles, why do they think they are? as far as i know craig is one of the only people in the world to have bred them, they are extreamly difficult to breed, and from what i have heard it takes 10-15 years to reach seual maturity. Pics would help but i'm getting southern snapping turtle or another mary river native.

Hornet is right, they may not be Mary River turtles, but if they are, I agree they are best with Craig and Gabrielle (seems to be unanimously agreed).

I am only going by what my neighbour has told me. I don't know anything about turtles or the different speices. Leave it with me for a few days and I will go and take some pics of them and post them on here for everyone to veiw. If they are not Mary River Turtles, they are still in need of a loving home.

They could very well be Mary Rivers - I believe John Cann spent decades tracking down the locality of the 'pet shop turtles' which were getting around during the 70's and eventually found them to be Mary River's...so they have been in captivity for some time...

Bek also said they were taken from the wild, this might give a better indication of what they are - Bek could you also ask exactly where they were taken from and some of the QLD locals might be able to help out with an ID that way too...

I live in Brisbane Queensland ( the great south- east). I just went and saw my neighbour, when her male turtle got sick a few years back she took them both to a reptile specialist and she was told the Female is a MARY RIVER TURTLE and the male is a Brisbane river turtle, both two different speices, yet she laid eggs for the first time last year.

The VERY last pic ( with bit of shoe in the back ground) is of her male Brisbane River Turtle ( so my neighbour has been told)

the female isnt a mary river turtle, they are both emydura species, most likley both brisbane river turtles, best thing to do is to hand them into the epa, they will most likley go to underwater world but possibly may be put on licence and given away, not 100% sure what the go is with WC turts.

the thing that made me think not mary river turtle was the fact they are 7-8years and have bred, and the fact they bred in a fishtank, as i said the only person to ever have bred them that i know of is craig, the "pet shop turtles" were collected as eggs so wernt captive bred.

Epa means what?????????????????????. Seems as though her local Reptile specialist she said she saw, doesn't know a whole lot about Turtle speices then.

whats craig going to do with them? they are off licence, craig would just hand them into the epa being such a common species.

Look at those pics, they are too beautiful to be destroyed, My neighbour wouldn't hand them in if she thought that would happen.
She doesn't want any money for them, all she wants is for them to go to a loving home, someone who can care for them. They have wonderful personalities and are hand feed, just beautiful.
