Hi guys, it's been a while.
I'm in the Sutherland Shire area in Sydney and I was wondering if anyone knows about where I might aquire a mesh filter head (think, small squares - I'd be comfortable with 5 x 5mm or smaller - instead of slats) for our ViaAqua 750? We lost one of our young Macleay turtles a few months back when his flipper got stuck in the slat of the filter head and he drowned overnight. I'm still beating myself up over it because it seems an enormous oversight on my part - they always used to rest their flippers on the filter head but (after having them for 3 years in the same tank) never got their flippers caught. I assumed it was safe and I never noticed him stuck there . I suppose when they were little their flippers were small enough to pull back out again, and now that they've grown they get stuck.
I've since taken the filter out all together and the tank's getting pretty rancid. I'm refusing to replace it with another slatted filter head in case my female turtle faces the same problem, but they're all I can find. Anyone able to help? Or I can DIY if someone around here's clever with those things and can tell me what sort of material to use?
Much appreciated.
