Hey all, I have read the sticky in regards to mites... I have NEVER had them. but I just recently changed to a different substrate, and bam, little red mites all over my 3 snakes. Our reptile supply shop isnt open til Monday, so i cant get any mite spray until then, so what can i use in the meantime to help the poor things?? I have bathed them thoroughly in betadine, and fully cleared out their enclosures, and they are now in tubs.... But Im lost as to what to do until Monday... One snake has red mites, the other has black.. yuck....

Any advice would be really appreciated! Thanks!

I could never reccomend sprays from the shop. We used one, my partners hands swelled up and the snake didn't eat for 4 months!

Untill you get your TOD, use your fingernails and scratch your snakes every 10 minutes from head to tail, they will be much happier for it.

or put a large water bowl in with them so they submerge them off.

Just go to the late night chemist in Hunter Street Newcastle and get some orange medic like you would use on kids hair for nits. costs about $15. Dilute it 50:1 and bath the snake and spray the cage. Repeat fortnightly 3 times.

Red mites? Wow.

Don't panic and put your guys through lots of different stuff.
Bathing in betadine and water, then something else might not be that beneficial
if you don't thoroughly get rid of them from other areas.
Don't move hides or anything into new home. Clean original enclosures. I did mine twice after missing
one lot of eggs and getting another mob of them. Good luck and get your mite eyes on : )

Do you think they came in on the substrate?

Oh yeah and that spray Stevent spoke about was reptimist, I would never use it again.

IMO your probably best to wait till monday. Move them off the substrate and put them in tubs.
Then when you have the proper reptile spray you can treat your reptiles.

An easy way to at least reduce the mites is to bath the snakes in warm water for 20 mins or so. Then wipe them down with damp paper towel, then place in a clean click clack (paper towel, disposable hide=cardboard box, water bowel). Repeat daily until you have they spray, changing between click clacks plus a new hide (this means there is no where for them to hide). Treat the click clack without the snake in it to a good clean.

Or do what wokka recommended, I have only used my method plus Mac mite once I was able to get it. Best of luck.

PERMOXIN better than TOD (imo) 40mls in a 10 litre bucket of H2O tad dah repeat in 12-13 to break the gestation cycle (as with any mite treatment).....$22-$24 per 250 bottle.
.......solar 17 (baden)

I thought the new orange medic formula was toxic to reptiles?

Reptile Mites - Karingal Vet Hospital

talks about orange medic in that somewhere...
Orange Medic was a very popular treatment until it was upgraded to Orange Medic Plus. The formulation was changed and there have been a few deaths reported with the new product. It is no longer recommended.

I have done thousands of treatments with orange medic and no problems, but i am sure you could find a suseptible animal. Likewise , I am sure there would be animals suseptible to TOD. My preferred treatment is permoxin but it is not available at every corner chemist as orange medic is.
