This was sent to me today. Now, like all these things, it probably didn't actually happen as in the story (these are often done for dramatic effect), but thinking about it, it could quite possibly happen indeed, not something I've ever thought about, but very good advice. I don't usually send these types of things on, having been on the net for so many years I've seen every story, hoax etc about a million times over, but thought this isn't quite as 'hoaxy' as all the rest due to the fact that it can easily happen. My apologies if you have seen it (I haven't so it can't be the most common thing going around the net) alternatively I may have seen it before but cant remember, in which case, it might be of use to some.

Be careful how you list names on your mobile phone!

This lady has changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag which contained her mobile, Credit card, purse...etc.... was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her Husband, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says "I've Just received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago."

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The pickpocket had actually used the stolen hand phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from the bank account.

Moral of the lesson: Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, sweetheart, Dad, Mom etc....... And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked thru texts, CONFIRM by calling back. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

Pretty much common sense, but it seems sense is not that common any more.

hmmmm, yeh that would make you think twice about how you list people on your phone.

Yes, common sense when you think about it, but how many of us who generally think we have common sense still list 'Mum' 'Dad', 'Home' etc on the mobile. I will admit I do.

It's okay listing people like that.

But sending your PIN over a text is stupid.

bet he doesnt do THAT again! ;)
that's gotta suck though. the poor bloke probably just wasnt thinking. (the husband i mean, the pickpocket obviously was!)

That all just seems to stupid for me. I bet it is another one of those forward emails that doesnt actually account for a real incident.

everytime i lose my fone i get it back cos someone calls the 'mum' number,..she doesnt know my pin numbers though,... :)
