hey all,

I got a murray darling which is almost a year old. she was a twin so i was advised to give her 2 wieners instead of one. Since then she has benn really snappy when i get her out, she is big enough she is piercing skin now so i want to get her out of it, so if i need to pick her up she bites, once i got her she is fine.

Any ideas on how to stop this? I even feed her in a seperate container which i have to move real slow to get her out of n use the feedinf forceps as a distraction, ive seen friends snakes where tthey put their hand inn like its a rubber snake n pull it out but this one i hand every 2 or 3 days started biting.. she shedded a week ago so i doubt its that,

help?

thanks.

Agreed, use a hook when getting her out. Only hold her for a short amount of time,5 mins or so and dont stress her out!She will grow out of it with time! Also not sure how big the enclosure is for her but it will stress her out if its too big.. hope this helps

now this thread is very interesting to me, i have the same problem, i have two MD's 1x female and 1x male. now the male albeit shy and very small is generally OK, however he is a one person snake, if you get him out 'you' put him away he wont allow another person near you while you have him. no worry he will grow out of it.

now the girl, when i first got her she was OK but a few days later she went vicious. striking at her box. open the lid and she was trying to *** pwn you. she is only 30cm ish long (bout 1 year). i tried giving her the 1month of a shield so she couldn't see what was going on, letting her settle in as such, didn't work, so i took the cover down, still the same. now here comes the key part:-

Ive always been trying to get her out at night after she has woken up and looking out. this is when she was most aggressive. even when out she would be striking at my off hand even the hand holding her. however, about 3weeks ago i was changing her enclosure paper during the day due to the mess she had made. i noticed she was under the paper so i decided to pick her up and have a hold. no issues. she didn't even think about biting me. 'light bulb' few days later i tried the same thing, got her out through the day, no issues or problems, been doing this for a few weeks now. the other night i got her out at night, same thing ready to strike,

so in note maybe try and vary the times you get your little one out. also try the hand smell thing, IE disinfect your hands when you want to hold your little one, and don't disinfect when your feeding, or use a different scented disinfectant.

hope this helps a little

I use disinfectant before and after handling as a cue to my snakes. I forgot to do so last time I took out my BHP and she decided to taste my wrist (not a strike - just a taste, but lots of tooth marks). I also handle during the day and feed at night because that is when they are naturally ready to bite. Finally, I often use a hook just to start getting the big snakes out. All are fine when out, but you don't want to startle them, as there can be a lot of blood.

go back to giving her one rat thats a bit bigger instead of 2 wieners...

It's been said a few times already but use a hook. I won't even attempt to get my Jungle out by hand because it will end up bloody every time. Once he is out on the hook though he is perfectly calm
