he came running out of the toliet in his boxers holding his shorts and says to me 'OMG MUM these pants were made in CHINA!' lol should have seen his face when i explained that most of his other clothes probably were too  he was gob smacked and wanted to know why cant we make them in our own country.

Good question.

I just bought a pair of Chinese denim jeans at K-Mart for less than the price of a packet of smokes. How can we compete with that?

Smart kid. Why can't we? If we didn't have 3 or more middle men between manufacturer and retailer, then we probably could but it would just cost so much more.

hahahaha! That made me giggle  What a cute kid ;)

There is very little production of finished products in Australia. We provide a large protion of the raw materials but very little finished product. One of the main reasons why we are one of the most expensive countries to live in.

Because Australians get a decent wage, if the fabric was made here and then dyed, cut and sewn in Australia the labour costs would be more than $20 and that's leaving out transport and sales costs.

It's up to us as the buyer to decide if we want to pay more to keep jobs here, if we are happy to pay $20 for something made in china there will always be shops to sell it. Otherwise they will keep getting made overseas by people earning $20 a week.

They only recently doubled the minimum wage in South Africa to $12 a week for farm hands if you don't belive people get paid so little.

Took the words straight out of my mouth so to say , I was once told by a friend in Bali that he gets paid 300,000rp per month working in a resturaunt , to give people a bit of perspective we normally get about 8-9,000rp for our dollar , sometimes more depending on exchange rate so it's around $30-40 a month ( I'm terrible at math so correct me if I stuffed up there)and that's for a decent job

I know 20 year old getting that per hour , sometimes we don't realize just how lucky we are here in Australia

yes its all about the money. I tried to explain to him how it works however i think i just confused the poor kid.

CrAzY world we live in :|

lol Sharky he is hillarious. I never forget when we anounced that we were pregnant with number 7 he piped up and said ' omg mum havent u got enough bloody kids'
(meanwhile we actually had a family meeting prior to concieving number 7 and he was all keen then!)

it is because our government is more worried about imports and looking after our trade agreement then the god old aussie manufacturing
business
this would be a easy fix stop imports. Australia should be a self sustainable country we are just sell outs. the government dont even know how many farms are owned buy Asia.
look at our resources we have gold uranium iron ore gas and many more yet we have 1 smelter left in Australia i believe
one day we wont have all these resources because we will have sold it all to other country's

i heard something on the radio the other day that if we got cut off for fuel that we would run out in 3 days how is that good planing on the government

I have a question for you all.
Who buys a 5 buck loaf of bread from the local bakery or do you buy from the big supermarkets for 1 buck.
Who buys fresh meat from the local butcher of do you buy the meat from a discount or chain meat place.
This is just two examples of what people do to save a buck then complain about how we import so much and the government ....blah blah blah.
I have 2 friend who have closed there bakery's because people are too cheap to pay what it cost for bread.
We all complain about whats imported how jobs are going OS but most people still wont support the local guy.
Just Sayin.....

ive not once complained! lol just sayin. I as a mother of 7 buy $1.00 loaves of bread and coles brand milk (we go through at least 3 litres a day!) i always feel guilty for not supporting our local small buisness and farmers BUT at the end of the day i cant afford to. Anyway at least i can tell my son that the bread and milk arent made in china

I like that we can buy really cheap crap at K-Mart it keeps my wife and son in a job

Guy Rossi is smart enough to go to these places of manufacture himself and cut out these middle men here in OZ we have too many people trying to make too much from other 's working hard !!

An issue here in the good ol USA as well!

The reality here in the UK is more and more of the money you earn is going toward essentials like keeping your house warm, your vehicle on the road, and food in your belly. I would love to buy British but the reality is that we just cannot compete with a lot of other countries regarding price. If buying goods from abroad means I have a little extra cash allowing me to indulge in non essential activities that give me pleasure then so be it.

Kindest regards

Endeavour
