Why on earth wouldn't you want a commission? You should be asking one, you've got some good talent. Even if it's just 'whatever you think it's worth', which is what I used to do when I was designing back in the day before kids and between jobs.
People are happy to pay for something beautiful, especially if it's personal between them and yourself. When I never used to ask for commission quite a few of my friends and some strangers used to hide money with a note either in my letterbox or house, they always felt bad not paying lol.

Everyone meet Evita! My latest creation. She is a Brook Sprite. I drew her COMPLETELY freehand!!! I'm so proud of myself!!
