Almost Legendary
Some of you may know I am a teacher at a college here in Cairns.
When I woke up this morning I thought that the day was going to be normal, although I was running late. I got to school around 7:10am (I'm normally here 20 minutes earlier) and there were three teachers on duty (this is unusual - teachers don't go on duty till around 7:40). They stopped me in my car and said there's been a fire, school is off for the day and to park up and wait for further instruction.
The school I work at is rather large and has a multitude of blocks - but the school is pretty much brand new (seven years old).
Sorry - I've been summonsed...
I will continue the story soon....
Ahhhh... The luxury of the internet - you didn't even know I was gone...
So - I walk down from the top car park and can smell the smoke. The carnage wasn't clear until I got to the staff room - but luckily the staff room was left untouched. Not a speck of damage. Unfortunately the middle school science labs, cooking labs and some classrooms are completely gutted.
There's no word yet what started the fire and it's under investigation.
While I haven't been affected directly with loss of personal property, you really do feel a huge loss when something you work hard for is destroyed in such a manner.
The fire broke out around 1am, and was brought under control about 3 hours later but flared up again by 6am.
Students have been asked not to come to school today (some 1400 students). I guess there'll be a lot of emotion tomorrow when school starts again - especially the fact middle school classes have been destroyed.
It's kind of funny - as a new school we're going through a lot of issues and we're all really working so hard (behind the scenes as well) to make it happen. This won't even be seen as a set back (hopefully) as we've come through a lot of adversity already to make this school happen.
I will be interested to hear the outcome of the investigations.
Anyways, that's my story for the day. Don't feel you need to comment - I just needed to type it as I left my phone at home and couldn't text my girlfriend...
