Some of you may know I am a teacher at a college here in Cairns.

When I woke up this morning I thought that the day was going to be normal, although I was running late. I got to school around 7:10am (I'm normally here 20 minutes earlier) and there were three teachers on duty (this is unusual - teachers don't go on duty till around 7:40). They stopped me in my car and said there's been a fire, school is off for the day and to park up and wait for further instruction.

The school I work at is rather large and has a multitude of blocks - but the school is pretty much brand new (seven years old).

Sorry - I've been summonsed...

I will continue the story soon....

Ahhhh... The luxury of the internet - you didn't even know I was gone...

So - I walk down from the top car park and can smell the smoke. The carnage wasn't clear until I got to the staff room - but luckily the staff room was left untouched. Not a speck of damage. Unfortunately the middle school science labs, cooking labs and some classrooms are completely gutted.

There's no word yet what started the fire and it's under investigation.

While I haven't been affected directly with loss of personal property, you really do feel a huge loss when something you work hard for is destroyed in such a manner.

The fire broke out around 1am, and was brought under control about 3 hours later but flared up again by 6am.

Students have been asked not to come to school today (some 1400 students). I guess there'll be a lot of emotion tomorrow when school starts again - especially the fact middle school classes have been destroyed.

It's kind of funny - as a new school we're going through a lot of issues and we're all really working so hard (behind the scenes as well) to make it happen. This won't even be seen as a set back (hopefully) as we've come through a lot of adversity already to make this school happen.

I will be interested to hear the outcome of the investigations.

Anyways, that's my story for the day. Don't feel you need to comment - I just needed to type it as I left my phone at home and couldn't text my girlfriend...

Ah epic thread. I wish there'd be a major fire hear at uni. Ugh. I don't want to go to class now... boo...

Shame about the science labs going up.
Is this the first week back for students?
It is for most of NSW, I believe.

p.s. try and get some pics of the carnage

some excitement for the students. do you have any idea how boring high school is now days?

that is terrible...!
it will be hard on the students as well..
schools are not just a education facility but a resource to the community at large
not only do the students needs to further their education but they receive supports that sometimes are not met at home

thanks slim ...hope things get better asap...d/l

I will get pics tomorrow - but they'll be in the newspapers in no time.

School started officially back last week - but only for two days.

And antaresia boy - school isn't too bad here - most kids who are in my classes seem to like them... I judge that by the fact they don't wag (haha - just kidding) - we do actually have quite a good school here and most students will agree!

Sad news Slim6y,
At least the school wasnt a total write off.
Other wise you may have had to transfer to Julatten and work with Carina
Last I heard she had been posted there.

Wow sorry to hear Slim6y - would have been quite a shocking ordeal!
Todays our first day back - luckily I've only had to contend with a CD that had been glued in the drive at the end of last term
Hope the burnt buildings get fixed quickly so everyone can get back into routine!

It is quite upsetting really - I certainly am anxious to know the outcomes of the investigation.

On the bright side, i guess as a science department we'll be getting lots and lots of new stuff.

On the very sad side - there was loss of life during the fire. About 30 fish died - unable to escape the heat of the flames.

Initial newspaper reports $1.5 million worth of damage - and even that may be conservative :(

Last year there was a fire at my school. A few Ex-stidnts decided to burn one of there old friends lockers....but the plastic the locker was made of has some flamable compound...or somehting. and the entire maths faculty was burned to the ground.

oooo poor little maths books lol

gosh the photo didnt look too good

has it been on the news at all yet?

hmmm that kinda sucks.... science is like the best part of school... well in my opinion any way....
hmmm seeing as it was the science and cooking rooms im guessing it had something to do with the gass?

you can guess all you like chickenman - but I somehow doubt it had something to do with the gas(s).

There were arrests made yesterday (so the news said, but the admin staff never mentioned anything) - the news mentioned 15 and 16 year old youths were arrested in relation to the incident.

And because there was $1.5million worth of damage - they are mentioning the consequences are going to be huge - but somehow - the Australian justice system doesn't strike fear into my heart (sorry to be so cynical).

It's going to be a highly emotional day - the students are all back today - there's be an air of excitement and tension... Makes for very interesting teaching.

Slimey if you wanted to get out of work .............geez................shouldve chucked a sickky.......and its probably the last time you get to do some cooking at your school .........burnt muffins!!!..........................true though its a shame slimey and I hope that it was an accident not a deliberate act ,but guessing I would have to say mmmmmmmmmm...
