why are broad headeds so strictly monitored?

They are listed as endangered and I believe poaching has been identified as a threat.

that annoys me when someone says you made that up. why would i make that up? i do not personally keep bungaroides so perhaps i shouldn't have said anything but the 2 people i know who keep them have both told me that DECC are keeping close records of what happens with these animals in the effort to start a breed and release program.....

I can't speak for NSW authorities but I live beside a state forest/ national park in Vic and the burn off procedures more or less leave nothing alive and no chance of escape from the flames. No point complaining, all you get is an overeducated moron that couldn't give a rat's about the wildlife.

ha ha, pure fascination is plenty of incentive to keep Bungaroides, money has nothing to do with this conversation, and studies and figures show that they are in fact at risk, and poaching is the main problem they face.... try to add something constructive to the thread, it doesn't have to be an argument....

DECCW isn't working closely with any keepers, and especially not on any breed and release programs. DECCW is in the process of subjecting reptile keepers to more scrutiny than they've ever had, and this is part of it. It's a pointless exercise in muscle flexing which will have no consequence to the decline of Broad-headed snakes in the wild, but it does raise the profile of the department, and put less than subtle pressure on specialised keepers. If they were serious about conservation of the species, they would embrace those who have them now and offer to manage a stud book for private keepers, so that those who have them have the best opportunity to maintain genetic diversity.

All this does is express their discomfort about the fact that they are in private hands.
