As you may know there is a talk fest on cane toads on ATM.

I really don't know about this talk about developing cane toad traps though, all you would need is the standard pitfall traps. I did some fencing in the gold coast hinterland and if you left any post holes open overnight then you often got two or three toads in them each morning.

Haven't read the link yet but my dogs water bowl has been squashed full with up to 10 toads in it every night this week.Man i hate toads so much grrrrrrrr

I used to catch toads as a kid for the Airlie Beach toad races which are still hel today...people bid big money on em sometimes. We used to get hundreds and we killed them all after each event. Some people would even find the biggest toad they could and take it home to train it by putting it under a bowls or somethng with salt round the edge, when the bowl was lifted usually the toad would go for the salt ,and then take off flat out..they obviously don't like salt or it might act like speed for em haha

I have done some wicked things with toads and still kille em most nights so i'm doing my little bit.And did i mention that i really really really loathe and despise toads !!!!!!!!!!

The trap sounds like a good idea, but it would have to be able to catch numerous taods if it were to effective.

Is there anything that actually eats the toad?

Regards Alex

Surely traps like that have been thought of before!!!That article says the toads have already left a trail of destruction through Kakadu...i knew they were making their way there but din't know that.

Man that just makes me fume.......

Has anyone ever though of or put up a donation thing so we can donate to get rid of these mongrel things?Maybe APS could set up a donation fund of some sort....

yeah keel backs
and as for the traps from my experience all we need to do is a couple million shoes out at night and pick them up in the morning i found three toads in one shoe this morning its getting ridculus

RE: Re: RE: New fight to squash cane toads

Just saw a toad trap on ABC news. It was a conical hole with a peice of plastic on it. Some water was placed in the center so that the plastic forms a funnel. You lure the toads to the trap with either lights (for insects) or dog food.

I think the relatives of the guy that decided that cane toads were a good idea, should be made to eat them all.

ive heard a new idea for a canetoad trap, basically like a yabby pot, goes in and cant come out and the bait is the recorded sound of a male canetoad mating call

RE: Re: RE: New fight to squash cane toads

It is hard to see anything other than biological controls having any impact on the Cane Toad population. These things reproduce 20,000 at a time!

The hormonal thing that stops them metamorphosing is meant to be 90% effective but even then that leaves 10% which given their reproduction rates can probably maintain their spread at the current rate.

Given that no true toads are native to Australia I am surprised that toad specific viruses or similar are not being considered.

If they are going to play with their genetics the "daughterless gene" they are introducting into carp populations has some potential. If they could combine this with say a canabal gene then ther numbers would be bugger all in no time.

I believe that the 'daughterless gene' is the most promising idea they've looked at. Do you know when the carp introductions are going to take place?

What's a canibal gene?

I thought they had already started on the daughterless gene for the carp but it will obviously be a few years before they know just how effective it will be.

As for the canibal gene... when I isolate it I will become rich and famous ;-) (I made it up.)

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: New fight to squash cane toads

The main problem with the daughterless gene (and all biological controls) is that the animal would eventually evolve a defense against it.
What you could do, however, is breed heaps of DG carriers and swamp the population. Initally you would need to introduce enough to drop the population. At some stage, you would need to deliver the coup de gras? and massivly over populate the area, say if there was 10,000 animals left you may need to introduce 1,000,000 DG carriers to ensure a complete wipe out. This would be easier with carp which live in rivers than with cane toads. And imagine the screams if you try and introduce 1,000,000 cane toads into an area.
But having said that I think it may be a worthwhile path

lol if u are talking bout it i think we would have a much better effect if we realeased 1000 000 keel backs but i still dont think thats a good idear

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: New fight to squash cane toads

the keelbacks wouldnt do much, they are way to small to eat adult canetoads
