Hi everyone,

I am a first time snake owner and have recently purchased an approx. 3-4 month old water python. He seems to be happy enough (has been eating and bathing in water bowl) but tends to hide a lot. His tank had a rock wall which he would disappear behind for days so I recently removed it and replaced it with a rock hide to try and increase interaction with him. However, since then he has taken to burrowing in his mulch. I really want to be able to hold/interact with him while he's still young but it's very tricky when he's constantly hiding. Has anyone got any tips?

Thanks heaps for the help. :)

A water python as a first snake! Amazing

snakes don’t want to be held or interact with you. That’s why he’s hiding(in hide and behind the ex rock wall) so you don’t come grab him.

maybe he was hiding for a reason… I can already tell the enclosure is far too big for a snake that old

if you must handle him, handle him when he’s out and about

water pythons have a good reputation for being bitey #]^{holes

Thanks for your help! :)

I’ll definitely just give him more space/time… don’t want to stress the poor little fella out.

Can I ask what size tank/enclosure you would recommend?

At that age I would have it in a tub setup till a year old

I’m not sure of water pythons but normally I would use a 9L quadrants tub
