Australian Frog & Reptile Show

The way I see it, specially looking at paragraph five, is no more Sydney reptile show as it used to be, or am I reading something wrong?

I for one am no longer interested in the easter show, havn't been in years and not likely to go again any time soon.

I definately won't be going just to see a reptile competition, with no reptile trade stands. I personally would much prefer the usual 3 day event than a one day trial competition.

Very disappointing imo.

What do you people think of this 'merger' idea with the easter show?

i reckon it sucks, i hate the easter show, and the city so i wont be there. really liked the Australian Frog and Reptile Show though just my just my opinion.

I think it will raise the profile of the hobby, but I avoid the Show and see no reason to change that. Didn't go to Castle Hill, either (too busy ATM). There was a lot of discussion when it was first announced. I guess you have to try something new at times. It is a shame they can't have reptile sales, as this would have attracted more hobbyists. I hope it helps people drum up business.

Bit of a let down in some respects because the reptile show its self will be small, but it will attract new ppl to the hobby and bring an unconventional crowd to look at reptiles as a hobby.
Hopefully this may teach the outside world a thing about reptiles and that they are not all evil and wish to kill them.

i'll try to find the link and post it but from what i gathered the merger was for only 1 year?

Due to a very late Easter in 2011, we are unable to put on the usual show at the Sydney Showgrounds. Instead, the Royal Agricultural Society, owners of the Sydney Royal Easter Show, have invited us to be part of their event. 1st paragraph, i thought that implied it was just because of the date clash?

This is an excellent point and I agree with a reptile competition show at the easter show for the exact reasons you've mentioned. But to remove the 'stand-alone' show is the big disappointment.

Maybe I did read it wrong, and I hope you are right. Perhaps they should state they still plan to run their usual show thereafter.

There is the Kembla Reptile Expo on the 10th of April that will be selling.... maybe you can make it to that?

I think it's just because of the dates clashing, but I'm still a little bit disappointed!! They've said it's only a trial, which is great as I'd hate for the Frog & Reptile show to become a side attraction to a completely different event such as the Easter Show. I can't believe they'll be downsizing the F&R show to fit in with the Easter Show!

I didnt read the link you posted but this has been discussed alot of times, the wild expo will be back as normal in 2012.

Never any suggestion of a 'merger'. This is a one-off circumstance brought about by a clash of dates, as has been said already. Stimmo is making the best out of a difficult situation.

The move to the Easter show may not suit us existing reptile keepers, but the added exposure will benefit all of us. I for one commend stimmo for this. He has done more to promote the hobby than most others out there. We should be thankful and supportive, and stop bagging him out.

Exactly, I don't see any of complainants investing a truck load of money as Stimmo and his business partner have. The original expo at Darling Harbour cost them an absolute fortune which is why it took so long to return.
We need to continue to support these events to help benefit us all.

Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk! That's all people do on this forum! They have a big OPINION to contribute but that's as far as it goes! We were asked to take over the Victorian expo coordinating after a few dramas with the three sets of appointed coordinators before us!

We got involved and started to get all the marketing and advertising sorted out. Luckily Brian has the same vision of the event as we do. He helped out a lot when it came to the financial backing aspect and general overseeing of the event. He has also been sorting out other things behind the scenes. Phil and Kevin also did a lot of hard work when it came to the event layout and secretarial duties. I'm sure there are things that I am missing and apologise to the committee if I have overlooked something. We are not getting paid, the committee also does not get paid!
God forbid that there is something that somebody on this forum does not like!

It does not matter how much of a success an event is; there will always be those that cannot help themselves when it comes to giving their BIG FAT OPINIONS! It's also these exact same people that would never raise their hand in life when it comes to things like volunteering to help or write an article for their local society magazine! What a disappointment they are to the hobby that the various societies helped to build over the years!

It'll be great exposure for the hobby, & hopefully attracting new blood. It's a one off event anyway, but so what if it becomes a regular fixture? Good thing, I reckon. What better place to promote the hobby than at the Easter show? Exposure to a broad cross section of the community, of all ages, at an event with a high attendance.

And for those who are more interested in the buy/sell side of things in & around the Sydney region, Castle Hill was just on, still got SOFAR, Illawarra, & Macarthur (or was it Hawkesbury? Can't remember which one isn't happening this year). Four trade shows vs one expo show, that's a pretty good ratio for existing keepers, I reckon. The trade shows are more for existing keepers than attracting new ones anyway, in my opinion.

Putting on a trade show imo is not as taxing as putting on the Wild Expo. They arrange for tables etc People buy tables to sell their animals and shops/businesses buy a trading space and they all sit at their tables or stand at their space and put out all their goods to sell, arrange for food/coffee vendors etc.
Wild Expo on the other hand, has to erect umpteen wooden enclosures to show of rare and interesting reptiles, rely on people to put their animals in the competition and all the cages, have entertainment, arrange for exhibits to come in (Nowra Wildlife's Croc) etc. Have tables and spaces organised for sellers and businesses etc. IMO far more work and blood sweat and tears goes into the Wild Expo. Stimmo has done a wonderful job the past few years. I commend him. I also commend him for taking the initiative to show off our hobby to the general public that would not go out of their way to attend any specific reptile show. Like others have said, hopefully make the general public aware of the animals that they want to kill first up and hopefully attract to the hobby. Stimmo also helps the clubs shows by putting on a reptile show for free for them to help them out. Hopefully, it will help all of us breeders , keepers in the long run. So instead of bagging, how about showing a bit of support.

It would seem my original query has been totally forgotten and taken out of context.

Anyone, including myself, calling the 'one off' cancellation of the show a disappointment is 'clearly an avid and keen supporter!!!

In a few final words....this is a one off event for 2011 only and our usual show returns in 2012. Simple, no confusion, and probably commended too.

Question answered. Confusion removed.

That was so easy wasn't it!

yeah i thought it was only for this year, i couldn't see them downsizing the show permanently....

better than nothing. I am looking forward to anything reptile related
