So me n the bf were discussing last night about my friends cat that is due in a week or two with a tummy full of kittens and how ive seen some people say they are always looking for "free to good home" kittens and was wondering if that is legal? I mean u can co2 rats, mice, quail, rabbits and so on but what about kittens and puppies.. I just want to add this is something i would never ever do in my eyes mice, rats and so on are nothing but food and cats and dogs are pets. Would u feeding you snakes cat or even something weird like horse or camel? Just a thought..

Never, it's bad enough we use rats and mice which to some people, including myself, are actually pets. Rats are actually very intelligent and make wonderful pets. I think it is very sleazy to get any animal someone has offered to a GOOD home and feed it to another animal.

Oh no, not this again.....
-It makes us VERY unpopular with dog and cat lovers, and is in general, socially unacceptable.
Our hobby isn't accepted by many people already, and these kinds of practices make it even worse.
-Cats and dogs have lots of bugs, parasites etc. which are bad for your snake, and there is a much greater chance of that been the case with 'free to good home' cats and dogs.

Yeah, good luck with the camel lol.

I bet some of the sickos on this site would take joy of gassing a defenseless kitten.
Theres no point anyway, you can feed them rats why choose an alternative? And its probably illegal, especially if they were advertised as "free to a GOOD home"
If the owner found out theyd be horrified, I know that if I gave someone a kitten to find out it was fed to a snake I'd be mortified and loathe the person who did it.

BTW this post isnt directed at the OP as I know they said they wouldnt do it.

It's not "illegal" as long as the died humanely, however it is frowned upon by the majority of the public (and a lot of the reptile community too). I think taking free-to-good-home pets with the intention of snake food is horribly immoral. Keeping snakes already gets enough flak as it is, why make it worse?

if i knew someone who wanted to feed a kitten to their snake... id have to slap them lol thats wrong and would (or should) be animal cruelty. i used to have rats as pets and they were awesome, so smart and fun to own :)

Of course it is legal as long as it is done humanely. I can't see how a cat or puppy is any grander in the scheme of things then a rat, mouse or rabbit. Mind you taking advantage of "free to good home" offers may be a tad immoral.

What do you mean again? Ive never seen a thred on it, and i would never actually try camel lol. Rats and mice hold alot of bugs but freezing kills them all so ive been told.

Whats a OP? and yes i know alot of cat haters that would love to see a kitten gobbled up just so there is one less on the earth

I think any offer of a kitten for sale taken advantage of is immoral, its just not right eating kittens in my eyes. I dont think it should be legal either they should have restrictions on what you can feed and what you cant, just like live feeding, i know its not something that can be patrolled but its getting some where

As much as I love dogs and cats, and I could not do it myself, I have to agree with junglepython2. Ppl dump helpless kittens in rivers, or in the bush to breed and kill our wildlife, but in turn I am sure the pythons wouldn't say no to one. Its nature that animals eat other, yet in captivity snakes are only allowed to eat rats. So long as cruelty didn't come into action, I can't see the problem with feeding kittens to snakes, unless of course it was detrimental to the health of the snake. As already mentioned, free pets usually come with no health benefits - no worming or vaccinations so be careful that you know all the pro's and con's before you do it.

Why is it different to take a rabbit or a rat someone is selling as a pet or giving away to a good home. It could be argued that rats are at least as intelligent as cats.

I don't think it should be legal, to be able to breed cats or dogs that you have to give away for free to get rid of.

How is it different to gassing a "defenceless" rat, mouse or rabbit

That's because they always get closed/deleted...like this one will quite shortly.
Before it does though - I see nothing wrong with it if the animal was going to die anyway and if it's dispatched humanely. Once it's dead it's no longer a cute kitten, it's a dead animal that will decay and be absorbed into the earth or wherever it happens to be buried/disposed of. Why not take advantage of that and not let that go to waste?

I am closing this thread as it will end up like all the others that have anything to do with cats in it. They just end up getting nasty.
