Just having a look through a little bit of information i have here and thought i would share this pearl of wisdom with you all...

This is in the event of a snake bite take note of the bold area

DO NOT wash the bitten area. The type of snake involved may be identified by the detection of venom on the skin. If the snake can be safely killed, bring it to the hospital with the victim.

What a great thing to be teaching people, mind you this information was published by one of australias leading uni's

There you go thought it was my time to have a winge so there it is

Matt

Thats in Australias Dangerous Creatures. i m sure of it. i'll check.

ok i might of been wrong though i have red that somewhere b 4.

In the book i mentioned it says "DON'T let anyone run a further rick by trying to catch the snake or kill it lunless they are highly experienced."

or just let it be jimmy.... they dont need the snake to make an identification that can be done with a venom identification kit

all information like this does it increase the chances of people getting bitten and in turn it gives snakes an even worse reputation then they already have.

Venom detection kits aren't 100% accurate and they take time. I've been there, dying on the hospital bed, asking for tiger snake antivenom while the doctors say "we don't know what you need, we're waiting for the results". I actually had the snake in a bag in the car, but bringing a live snake in wasn't going to help me due to the innevitable hysteria and I wasn't prepared to ask my friend to kill it and bring it in, but if he had I would have recieved antivenom sooner, which could have been necessary to save my life if things had been a little different.

just saying it isnt good advice to be giving the general public thats all, you will end up with one guy that got bitten by a snake because he stood on it by accident, then his mate is in the bed beside him because he tried to catch it, got bitten and the snake still got away

Yeah, generally it's terrible advice, there are too many heroes who would love to have an excuse to kill a snake despite the dangers to themselves and those around them. In the majority of cases, hospital staff couldn't identify snakes anyway.

But just think, if I'd killed the snake instead of putting its wellbeing ahead of my own, the venom would have had less effect on me, and being primarily neurotoxic venom, my brain would probably function better and people would have to put up with less of my drivel! ;)

(if anyone is wondering, yes I'm joking and no, if I was there again I wouldn't kill the snake).

Actually, I told so many people off while I was in hospital that time, everyone asked what I did to the snake and was confused or pissed off when I hadn't killed it even though I easily could have, they couldn't understand why I wished it well and hoped it had a long happy snakey life.... much unlike the time I went to hospital from a cat bite!!

HAha, yes u have to watch out for those cat bites, scratches from them can also be lethal so make sure u eliminate the threat  . so it was a wild snake then?

Thing is Sdaji. The extra effort you would put in trying to kill or capture the snake would be better put to applying a bandage and trying to relax while you wait for the ambulance and if you take the snake into the hospital you have to wait while they get an expert to identify the snake then settle the argument between the him and the second expert.
Lets face it, The discussion is pretty moot. If your into snake you should at least be aware of whats just bitten you.

Yes, but they won't believe you. I was calmly asking for tiger snake antivenom between the time symptoms were significant enough to show I needed it until I could no longer speak or move. "How do you know it was a tiger snake?" "It had a big boofy head, single subcaudals etc etc" nothing would convince them.

If the bugga bit me I'd kill the little poo myself

The cat? :D or the snake?

I hope never to be bitten by something that dangerous though i sppose accidents do happen.

You generally have to be a pretty huge moron to get bitten. It's almost always easy enough to be careful enough not to get bitten.
