Just curious to know what temps people keep for their Olives, including what cooler night temps you give them, through the seasons including winter cooling.

My Beautifull and faworite. Mine Olives have now minimum temperature 18C and heating time between 10am and 2 pm on 24C. I think that this is right cooling setup

Thankyou Slateman! :)

As my little Clarice is so young, I'm giving her 24hr heat at the moment, but I'm just planning ahead and want to get a bunch of the expert opinions out there...

Curious to know what day and night temperatures people keep for Spring Summer, Autumn, Winter and what length of days.

Paul, if you're around I'd love to hear what you have to say in particular.

Thanks :D

olive temps

hi..
slatys temps for a cooling adult looks pretty good to me. and thats about the range of temp we give our adults.

with changing temps during differant seasons i couldnt really help you nic as this is somthing that we let nature care for really as ther are out doors.
but after adults are warmed for breeding we provide a basking spot in the mid to high 30s. the rest of the enclosure runs at abiant temps to a certain extent.
so our average temp for summer is around the 36 mark but the hide is located under cover in the shady area. with a drop in temp of around 4 degress on average.
our average night time temp during the summer 30 with a slight drop in temp for a few hour just prior to daybreak
lol thats probably not answering your question though..
cheers paul.

Thanks Paul :)
Much appreciated - if only we has an outside in this flat LOL.

What about you two Graham, and David? What future heating plans do you have for Roy, Pris and Posseiden?

Hey Gorgeous, (no, not you Mark, Nicole), how come you can remember everyones snake names? I have a hard time remembering my own Maccies name and they are 1, 2, 3 and 4 :) Must be the Altzym.... Altsyner, err, altisimes err I mean old age setting in :)

:)

Yeah, she's good at that, isn't she?

Poseidon (one "s"! ) has a heat mat that gives her around 35 constantly in the hot spot. He spends 99% of his time sitting on that - LOVES the heat! The rest of the enclosure is ambient, which these days is pretty cool. (roll on summer!).

Mind you, he's always eating (guts!), so is digesting prey a lot, which could explain his predisposition (love that word) for the hot spot.

Yep, sorry David, had to go the phonetic spelling for Poseidon

Clarice is the same right now, heat mat under half of hide plus a third of open-aired enclosure where she spends most of her days (35-36), and the rest of the enclosure ambient...

What plans for the future do you have?
I'm think that I will drop temperatures for night when summer comes, and then give her season adjusted temps from then on... winter cooling included...

Oh, and I nearly forgot you Afrifishy...
Remembering names of people's snakes is sooo much easier than remembering the names of all the idiots in the new office - I guess it's all got to to with what you really love as opposed to what you absolutely detest

Hi Nicole

Roy and Pris have enclosures that give them a lot of scope temps wise. They have two hot areas a rock shelf up high and a heat cave on the floor. Shelf is around 36 during the day and 32 overnight. The cave is constant day/night at around 32. The coolest area during the day is around 24 and 21 over night. They have shelves and other obstacles that allow them to find a temp they like. They tend to sleep most of the daylight hours although they move around a bit to regulate I guess. At night they are constantly on the move (looking for an escape route. The gradients are between 12 and 14 degrees during the day and 10 degrees at night.

For the future I'm not real sure at the moment. I think their houses will do for another year at least. I've set up enough controls to allow quite a bit of flexibility with temp gradients. I imagine my problem over Summer will be to ensure enough cooling.

I could by an old bar fridge and pass a liquid filled tube through it and then through the enclosure with a small 12vot pump circulating the fluid through the pipe. I'd need some kind of cooling radiator in the enclosure to cool it down and an condensation collector to catch the drips. Then a thermostat to control the pump. Hmmmm that sounds like it would be fun to build. I can then circulate it through all the enclosures.

Thanks Guys!
Graham - that cooling idea sounds, well ...cool ! :)
Let us know how you go if you get this one underway!

ps. I just got the quote for Clarice's big house today - ouch!

Had to do a little metric conversion, but here's what I run. Under heat lamp is around 37C+, coolest spot is somewhere around 27C during day. Night time I just leave a 60W ceramic heater running, and the ambient temp of room is about 26C. Middle of summer here now, so haven't worked out the cooling stuff yet. I'm running a pretty good gradient, but notice they do like it hot. Spend a lot of time under lamp during day, and play all night. I can always tell when they are coming up on shed though, because they retreat to coolest spot and stay there for the week before they shed.

All this info on cooling is good stuff. Something I've been working on for a while is hooking all my climate control and lighting to an old computer. There are some good sites that have up to the minute temp/weather info for all over Australia. I was thinking of picking a spot in their natural range, and having the computer match it. Control the lighting same way for sunrise/set of same spot. Still in the works, but should be pretty cool if I ever get my act together and make it all work. I sure do envy you guys that can just set up an outside enclosure. :?

Thanks Al! Appreciate your response!

I think that set up sounds incredible, I have heard of a few people doing similar, it's beyond me though... let us know when you get yours up and running, and between you and cyber-crimes (who I think was also interested), maybe you can explain it to me in words of one sylable.

BTW, I can't remember how old your Olives are, have you cycled them through seasons or cooled them yet?

No not yet. They will be 1 year at the end of this month. Maybe I should throw them a birthday party. Just not sure what kind of cake they like. :?
