well after 3 months, i finally found my turtle that escaped. he was dead unfortunantly, rest his soul. but it was in the most obvious spot. in the cupboard right nexxt to the filter, in the cupboard, i have cleaned out that filter many times since, but never seen him there, we searched for WEEkS on end for him, every day, every night, up and down the house. we thought he must have gone outside and down to the neighbours damn. poor little thing.

anyways, i've seen that people have turtle shells etc,and i was wondering how they do it? because its all pretty icky at the moment, all dried etc, but i was wondering how you would get all his remains out of the shell and if there is anything you need to do to the shell to preserve it?

Not sure about preserving the shell, but remove as much flesh as you can and put the remainder in a container with Dermestid beetles, they will eat the rest.

Isn't it a bit yucky doing that to your little friend?

But I would suggest boiling the shell for several hour which should break down all the bits that are left, then you could srcape it out. Either that, or as someone else suggested, bugs should do the trick. What about putting the shell on an ant's nest?

But again, I couldn't imagine doing that to something that had once been my pet...

well as gross as this sounds i did the same thing with a horses leg:shock: pretty much cut as much of the meaty parts off as possible. lol then with the biggest pot i could find i boiled it for a day or half a day.... or until all the meaty parts were gone:D umm... dont put herbs in with it to make it smell nicer, cos u will never be able to smell that herb ever again without wanting to vomit:) then i think we left it in some bleach, or some thing that dissolves enzymes. not for too long as it will eat the whole thing away. so did that for a bit then put it out side in a container with the top open so ants could eat any other bits still on it......... so yeah was so gross:) and the smell is coming back to me now as i type this.... but yea it looks very cool once it is all done. was going to wires the leg bones together but havent done that yet:D

Where did you get a horses leg

Dermestid beetles are the quickest, but be sure to do this outside, because they will eat their way through your house when they are done. Slaters also do good work, but are very slow. Given the time of year, you'll have a slow go whichever insect you use. Pick off what you can, first. When the whole thing is pretty clean, bleach it to kill bacteria and to de-grease the bones. Good luck!

put the who;e thing in a fishtank, then the beetles cannot escape

mine never got out, tho i made sure there was a good supply of, umm, food, for them. If you do use dermestids, make sure you handle anything in there with gloves on, and don't inhale too near the frass, bad stuff.....

hi this has nothing to do with this but i am new and i cant remember how to edit my profile plz help
