Looking at many ads on some of the websites it occurs to me that there are people that are selling pairs of animals as breeding pairs. This can be rather confusing and misleading. Not every pair of animals will breed, some animals just won't. I think that if people sell a pair of animals they should sell it as a pair but not saying that they are a breeding pair just because its a male and female of a species. It just anoyed me and I thought I'd share it with APS members.

Cheers

Yep, I know what ya mean. Been stung a few times myself. Can't believe anyone these days.
Tizz a shame.

Agreed Insectovor, buyer beware on that,
how many herpers buy adults that wont breed.
I have a mac female who was guaranteed a breeder - I would be happy if she was a feeder!! lol
The best way to breed herps is to buy hatchies and wait!

Hey ad, that not a bad lyric

"I have a mac female who was guaranteed a breeder - I would be happy if she was a feeder"

Got a guitar? What drugs am I on

Older animals might also be harder to get used to living in a new place. The story I refer to goes as follows;

A man who kept and bred his snakes for many years passed away. All his animals went to a friend who was a good herper himself. This guy never managed to breed these animals and as a matter of fact most animals died within 2 years as a lot of these animals didn't feed voluntarily. Change of habitat and owner caused these animals to die.

Yes i agree Ad. I also purchased an adult female mac which is a proven breeder, laying 2 clutches so far. Purchased her last year and still hasnt fed for me.

I think that just because a pair breeds for one keeper doesnt mean they will breed for someone else. Perhaps the change of location or the environment of new enclosure puts them right off after spending years in a cage they've grown up in.

Pair?breeding pair?

Yeh your right there insectivor buyers have be careful many sold as pairs are clapped out or incompatable or both. :(

RE: Pair?breeding pair?

It is also hard to know the age of the animal, it may well have been a breeder, but how long ago?? It may be too old too breed anymore. Just another thought.

RE: Pair?breeding pair?

Gotta agree with ad,the best way to breed herps is to buy them as hatchies and be patient and breed from them, then you know the full history of the animal and it's behaviour etc, some people are in too much of a rush to breed i'm not sure if just to make a buck or two or what???

RE: Pair?breeding pair?

yes so many think boy+ girl = hatchlings if they wre all that easy reptile prices would cheap as
