Hi, thinking of installing a computer fan in the lower half of my enclosure, to blow over the water bowl. my setup is not optimal (cant afford new enclosure) with humidity in the lower half higher than above, due to heating from above. would this improve/even out humidity? Was thinking i could hook it to the thermostat, lights on fan on, lights off, fan off. No idea how to do this. Anyone who can help, id appreciate it. cheers. Please let me know if its a bad idea, or any other way to improve the situation. Ta. P.s. he spends most of his time about the middle where humidity is about right, but im already using two containers of water to acheive that.

Is your animal having trouble shedding? If there's no problems, don't bother. Humidity doesn't stay constant in the wild, they can deal with some fluctuation.

Thanks sxe, no, no problem shedding as such, just developed a few dry scales lately. bought a new hygrometer and discovered it was a bit on the dry side, so ive added another water bowl.
so, aslong as he can acces higher humidity he should go ok?

I am with SX. Why bother. If you want to draw more air over your water do it with better ventilation. Because the enclosure is heated hot air will be vented out the higher vents (and gaps) and drawn in from the lower ones. Place you water bowl in front of the lower vents.

If you have animals which tend to problem shed provide them with a humid hide. Most of the hides I use allow the snake to enter from the top. In the bottom I have a water proof container (eg a hobby box from Bunnings) with some sphagnum moss. When slough time comes around I will pour in a small amount of water. Then if the snake want humidity to assist with its shed it will lay in there for a couple of days.

If you were to use a fan I doubt it would have the desired effect, the constant breeze may give your snake a chill, water bowls and electric fans don' t mix etc etc.

The standard practice for increasing humidity is to place the water bowl over or under a heat source like a basking lamp or heat mat. Australian snakes are however dry climate critters and generally do not do well with high humidity.

Thanks herptrader. I will scrap the fan idea. Water bowls are already infront lower vents, but maybe i can just enlarge the vents some. Also im looking into getting some heat mat too. cheers.

I do that too, but only to keep the fake plants looking good. lol would 6 hrs really make that much difference?
