So I have a year old (just under a meter) male bredli who I love to death and want to do the right thing for.
I've bought him a big tank (4ft, a bit big for him at the moment I know) which I have just started setting up and I went out today to pick up some supplies..
I am currently in Cairns at the moment and the chick at the petshop gave me some advice that I wanted to double check

1. I don't need any heating up here.
2. I need a UVA/UVB light for him
3. He's fine without heat even in the aircon

I admit I am not sure what to do with heating up here.. but people in the petshops who give reptile advice make my skin crawl for some reason and I always like to double check.

Thanks in advance!!

Every reptile needs a heat source. You do not need UVA/UVB.
It may be different in a hot climate, best to check with peeps that live up there.

1. I don't need any heating up here. id still use heat [ refering to your question 3]
2. I need a UVA/UVB light for him you dont need a uv light , but theres no harm using one .
3. He's fine without heat even in the aircon , ill say it needs heat if the room is airconed

answers in red .

Thanks for your help Fay and Jas - I did dismiss a lot of what she was saying but it's made me uneasy about heating.
I think a good thermostat is definitely in order

not every reptile needs an artificial heat source, but your pet will be happier and healthier with a thermostatically controlled heat source.
Fay is spot one in regards to UV.

just let the thermostat do the work. if its hot it wont turn on the heat and if its cold(aircon) then it will kick in and get the needed temp. i think only diamonds need uva/uvb and even then ive heard of people not using them with diamond and still have no problems.

To put it plainly the chick in the petshop is a moron.

You need to heat as you would any other snake kept in an air conditioned environment to provide a basking spot and gradient.
You dont need UV though some prefer to use it "just in case". Its an unnecessary expense in my opinion.

Yes you still need heat, especially if it's in a air-conditioned room, just make sure you have a thermostat, so you don't cook your snake if it does gets to hot.

No, snakes don't need UVA/UVB light (there nocturnal remember), pet shops will tell you that so you spend more money in there shop.

Haha, yeah I got my suspicions when I walked in and asked to look at the thermostats and she handed me a little $13 exo-terra thermometer and said that was all I needed.

Well what are your room temps? Bredli's can happily sit in a 35+ degree hot spot. You might just want a low watt heat source like a heat chord.

Not all pet shops give bad advice and there is some REALLY bad advice given on here from time to time , but I suggest you find a better shop.
I know people in cairns who still heat their snakes , and of cause in aircon you will have to heat them , Just use a thermo and low wattage so nothing will overheat.

Very true , I have seen some of the dumbest advice offered on here from time to time ...

Except in pet shops there's no one to ever correct bad advice.
That's why I always check here because even if bad advice is given there will be someone there to correct it.

Very true , I have seen many times some one has spend big dollars in a pet shop only to come on here and be told they did not need half of it ....

Just a kind of on topic question when do you need to use uv/UVB and when don't you need to?

Lol yeah, she was shoving $50 UVA/UVB bulbs in my hands saying I'll definitely need them :?
I did end up walking out with that little thermometer just until I get a thermostat though.

Anyway, thank you guys so much for the advice I appreciate it so much!
Wouldn't know what I would do without aps ha. ^_^

You still need to use a thermometer as you need to know what the temp is.The the dial on the thermostat will not give you accurate temps.

but I suggest you find a better shop.

Ha, ha, ha, in Cairns? All the 16 year-old shop assistant girls are experts here.

Can I ask, is it necessary to have the snake in an airconditioned room? You would save a lot, both on equipment and electricity if you kept it in ambient temperatures. The only time you would need some extra heat is for about 3 months in winter.

If anyone In a pet store advises anyone reptiles do not need heat they should not be working In any pet store thats just incompetents
on a massive scale If reptiles do not get heat they will die a slow death
You dont need a UVA/UVB light waste of money
never put or keep reptiles near a air con they are cold blooded meaning they need a heat source at all times
you should go back there and tell the person they have no idea what there talking about thats pathetic
