HI there, the question I have is can a snake get into my roof space and grow too big to get out? I live in modern brick home thats only a few years old, i have no pets and have only had a few mice in the 4 years I have been here. My wife has heard a noise up there for a few months now and i first heard it yesterday and I have heard it a couple of times since. It sounded like a small dog moving/thrashing about and it only last a few seconds at a time. The noise has only come from one end of the house and has only ever made a noise during the day, never at night.
I am worried that if iam right and it has grown too big to get out it will die up there and I dont believe we have mice in the place or not enough to sustain a snake anyway.
Does anything I described sound like it may be a snake?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice someone can give.

Well it sounds like something is up there
If it is a snake it is most probably a coastal carpet given your location
Plenty of people around Brisbane will offer to help you I think

pop the manhole cover and shine a torch around, if its been up there a while surely it would have sloughed, or defecated which would be visible

I had mice that sounded like possums, I'd prefer a python than a rat

And that was in a new brick and tile rental

If it is a snake and it got in it will be able to get out again so you don't need to worry about that. I think that you will find that it is most likely a possum. Yes they are most active at night but that is why you will here them in the roof during the day as that is when they are sheltering there and they move around a bit while they are sleeping. My next best guess would be birds and if so would be Indian Mynahs or Starlings. If you back onto bush in an area where Lace Monitors live then it could be a goanna but more likely the former two. If you are concerned about it have a possum removalist come and check the roof for you. If it is not a possum they can help you work out what it is and solve the problem. To solve the problem someone is going to have to find out how it is getting into the roof and fix the roof regardless of whether it is a possum or bird.
