For science sake, breeders out there... what have been some health issues you have encountered with your hatchlings?
i just read that one with the twisted spine, very sad. :( but surely there are a heap of potential problems out there.
Would be nice to start compiling a list of issues to look out for .. surely alot of n00b breeders like me would benefit from such knowledge.

Maybe there is books that can also recommend?

REASON for my Question..
had a sucessful year this year.got 23 eggs from my girl this season and got 100%!!! :D

last year i learnt the harsh lesson of the early egg leaving scenario and yoke sack thingo still attached. In my typical mothering panic, i raced them off to the vet and it cost quite a few shiny pennies. Which isnt a problem, just felt a bit of a waste when eventually found out the truth to it all and was a common event.

just checking up on my hatchlings just now and one of my lil ones for a moment i thought was dead as wasnt responding in the way they normally do. but it was ok. just really really sluggish. seperated him for now. such a sweet little thing, he just didnt seem to have the strength like the others do. So i don't want to hit the panic button just yet, but concerned nether less. might be something i can help it now with etc.. etc.. and there might be other problems, just i cant identify them yet. :/

Thanks for your time in advance peoples.

Hey there,
I bred my first (&sofar only clutch) 3 yrs ago. My girl laid 29 healthy eggs - not bad for a first time mum!!
Anyhow she rejected one, but I kept it & incubated it seperately just to see how it would go. When they started to emerge, I worried about the one I incubated seperately, so after 2 days slit the egg - big mistake!!!! It was only half of the size of the others but perffectly formed and an absolute beauty!! A few days later it died.
One of the other hatchlings still had some umbilical cord attached and its 'navel' was swollen with a dark mark. I got some cotton (sewing thread) & gently tied it around the base of the cord and wiped some betadine on the end of it. I kept the snake in a seperate clean container with damp paper and applied a little betadine each day until the cord dropped off about 4-5 days later. The swelling and dark mark got better each day and after 2 weeks was as healthy as its siblings (no trace of anything wrong).
That's it apart from the non-feeders.
I just had to think for myself. I wasn't a member here then & didn't really know anyone that had snakes let alone was knowledgable about them.
Anyone else?

perhaps if i post something here really controversial instead... THEN i would get everyones 2 cents. lol

i think it would be interesting and informative to hear the flip side of "i have hatchies.. woohoo".

I was told recently "where there's livestock, there's deadstock"...

there are a few of us are entertaining the possibility of breeding in a few years so this information would be appreciated

I second that.
My son is hoping to breed his Jungles this year, and any info before he starts will be helpful.
It's really good to hear when everything goes right, but it would be interesting (and maybe a bit sad) to hear about what can go wrong and why.
