I'm having clutch issues with my Vitara. The friction point was right down the bottom of the pedal and I was finding it really hard to get it into gear while I was driving. Also because there was no space to ease the clutch off I was driving like a learner again semi bunny hopping when I took off. So a couple of months ago I adjusted the cable and voila it was fixed. However a couple of weeks later it changed and was back to the way it was. So I adjusted it again. Now for the third time it's doing the same thing. So before I adjust the cable for a third time, is there something else that would be causing this?

Either your cable is stretching, in which case it needs to be replaced before it snaps. Or the 'finger' springs on the pressure plate are damaged, which will mean the clutch pressure plate needs replacing.

I would be leaning to the latter.

Check to see if the cable has stretched from where you tightened it what type of car is it? And how old it? It's rare for a car clutch cable to Frey and snap but not un herd of on newer cars over the first few years cables stretch stacks look at old fixed winged aircraft in your terms) the rudders and flaps where all on cables they stretch but last a long time without fraying or snapping Unless the wires rubbing.

I personally would be leaning towards the pressure plate but in a mechanics mind look at the easy stuff first so have a good look at the cable!

If you where closer IDE look at at for ya mate.

Also check to see if it's connected to your clutch pedal properly. Newer cars are the bomb hydraulic clutches only seals go in them hahaga.

Cheers guys. It's a 97 Vitara so not new at all.
I was worried it was the clutch going. I can fix just about anything as long as I have the manual but yeah hard to fix something if you dot know what to fix. Thanks again

Cable should be good on a 97 I would be betting my nuts that you will be replacing a clutch soon :(

What can cause a similar issues is a cracked firewall. I had a similar issue on a 91 rodeo. Where the clutch master cylinder bolted to the firewall was cracked, this meant the firewall deflected every time the pedal was pushed. Get someone to look at the master cylinder when the pedal is pushed to see if it moves.

If its cracked you can get someone to weld the firewall or get 2 bits of 1.6-2mm sheet steel and bolt the master cylinder back in place. You put 1 piece on either side which clamps the firewall, this is much stronger then welding anyway.

As others have said,it would be the pressure plate springs. If you have been adjusting the cable it would have the the warning signs of the clutch assembly failing not the cable. It needs to be replace asap before it collapses or shatters and you won't get any gears at all.Don't change a single item, replace the kit, which is a pressure plate, clutch plate and throw out bearing. Its not an easy fix unless you have mechanical knowledge and understanding of the clutch operation.
