If I owed the tax man money, he would be ringing my phone, sending me letters, demanding payment arrangements and charging me plenty of interest.

So how exactly am I supposed to happy with getting hung up on by a computer when I ring them? Maybe I should be charging interest!

Whilst reading a few threads that involve the ' Department' lately, or would they prefer we call them god and never question them?, I've come to the conclusion that this MESS that is supposed to be running our country certainly needs as review, probably every department needs going over.

They should be subject to public review and it should be at their cost! Might chip a little away at the debt owed us in interest and time

The people who work in the public sector have to cope with a lot more than pleasing customers and no organisation, public or private, is without minor issues. I would rate my experience with the private sector much more unpleasing with overseas phone workers and trying to cut corners by charging me extra fees for services which are clearly not costing anything.

I used to work for the NZ IRD as a return and debt collector. Armed with a baseball bat I could.... Hmmm - I wished a baseball bat was what we were allowed to use.

My job was to 'find' people. And I never really had too many problems with that.

But these were people that owed several thousand dollars.

One easy trick, if someone owed us money, we were able to locate their bank account details and just 'take' the money.

Or.... If they were working, we could just take their pay packet.

They got hold of us pretty quickly at that point :)
 
In the public sector you generally have a choice though. If you're not satisfied with a companies service, goto the competition. There is no other choice involving the ato.

I also understand that a lot of people do wrong by the ato and can be hard to chase down but I pay my tax, too much of it as I get a return every year. I earn my money and I buy what I have. If I happened to owe them money I would talk with them to sort it out as soon as I knew.

But, I'm starting to understand why people would just tell them to take a hike. If my situation changed now and they started chasing me, the answer to their next phone call would be a computerised voice telling them that they need to call back in a couple of months.....beeeeep....

Edit: well I didn't write that correctly, but you can probably get the gist.


Note: can I charge them interest?
 
Yeah, I hear what your saying, but the woeful customer service seems to the standard in many Australian organisations in both the public and private sector.
 
That's because they make the good people redundant! Eg me haha

In hospitality we do our best to treat people like they are paying our wage..... Because they are!

If anyone is looking for a staff training/customer relation/marketing/entertainment/quick learner with plenty of business experience to help their business be the difference to this standard opinion, feel free to contact me. I'm sure I can help you in some manner. Efficiency is also a strong point
