I just weaned a litter of rats. Usually I end up with about 50/50 males to females give or take a bit.

This litter had 8 males and only 2 females. A ratio of 4:1 is a tad squewed... not that I care much as the males do grow to a larger size which is what I require at the moment.

Yes, I think Dobby is right on this, I have mainly older males at the moment and tend to get many more males than females.

Same here, I have one old male and his last litter was mostly males. He has a change of life coming this weekend....heheheh

C'mon Cheryl, you are supposed to be good at this....LOL

hi,
we wean around 100 to 200 every week and our breeders are never any older then 12 months old, i think the weather has a lot to do with it here, in nth qld, we seem to end up with more males in summer and more females in winter, but as for if the age or weather has any thing to do with sex, i'm not sure,
i know when i bred birds that we seemed to get more males early in the year and then late in the year, the middle months from say may to september we got more girls,

cheers,
steve.........

Well, guess we get a 50/50 ratio here. Its a diff climate. A lot drier I guess. But then we give the growout ratties a lot more water than the breeders? We've been told as well, that we should change breeding female rats at 6mths max, and breeding males at 12mth max.(from the mob that grow ratties for venom farming) Cheers Cheryl

i agree with that cheryl, i find after 6 to 8 months the females don't produce as good,

cheers,
steve........
