Hi everyone, im new and was just wondering what sort of red lights to use for night viewing, is there a particular type?

Thanks

Carly

i have been using Exo-Terra infrared heat glo lights for a month now. they are geat for night time viewing and for an overall heat source.

cheers

Thanks Craigc do you know if the light has to be infrared or can you just use a party globe?

If it does not have to heat and is only used for viewing, any red or blue globe is suitable.

Yeah its just for viewing hes a bit shy in the light and wont eat as well I will only turn it on when i want to see him at night. Is it true that they cant see red light at all.

Appreciate all your help.

Hi Carly,
I use 12v compact neons from Jaycar Electronics, these are great as they are completely enclosed and easily mounted, and emit very little heat. (I use ceramic heat fittings which emit no light).

Red or blue is meant to be far less disruptive to the snake's photo period, but I don't think they can't see red or blue at all, more likely it resembles dawn or dusk for them, rather than white light which I guess would resemble full daylight.

BTW Welcome to APS! :)

Oh, the other thing to look for is that with standard party bulbs you may have a coloured bulb, but clear neck on the bulb, so that the snake ends up with some white light anyway, which defeats the purpose to some extent.

Carly
You could use a standard party light for viewing and paint the neck of the bulb with a special paint, not sure what it's called, but know some members on here will be able to tell you, or buy a normal bulb and paint.
What snakes/reptiles do you keep?

Neil

Yup the paint you mean is high temperature engine paint, you can buy it at bunnings or any auto store for around $15.00 per aerosol can. Burn off the fumes from the paint before putting the globe in with ya snake though. :) Welcome aboard by the way :)

You can actually buy red and blue globes with no white neck in some pet shops for around four or five dollars.
:)

go down to your locakl electricity store and sask for a red 75 wattt reflector globe for like 5 bucks and your done

Thanks everyone, I have a murray darling and a coastal, the murray darling is about 5 foot and the coastal is about 2 foot. thanks for all your help
