It seems to smooth a finish mate, use a coloured groute from bunnings, gives good texture and easy to use, $10 a box

I'm using cheap tile grout, and then painting it in a sand stone pond sealer to protect the grout. And to make it a nice colour I am half way through my project, and so far its turning out pretty sweet!

or acrylic render works well too. to colour the render just mix in some acrylic paint
