ok so today i woke up expecting to see a shed in my female jungles cage(been about 4 days since milky eyes), but when i checked on her she hadn't shed but had skin hanging off her tail. This is the only part of her body that has started to shed. Should i help her get the skin off the tail or leave it? Has anyone had this happen before, if so what did you do to fix it?
Cheers,
Brad

one why you can help her get the shed off is by soaking her in warm water and seeing if it comes off. Also have a rough object in the enclosure will help her during the shed,

Just give it a warm bath for a 10 to 15 minutes for couple of day sand see how it goes. Soaking it will soften the skin and will help the jungle get the shed of itself. What I have done in the past is after soaking it I wet a bit of towel and hold the snake (not tight but just a little bit of pressure) with it in my hand and let the snake slide through it a couple of time this normally works.

Would doing that also get the head scales off, or does the snake have to start first?

I would just soak it for the first couple of days then try with the wet towel. If has got something to rub its head on it should be able to start. The thing is you don't want to be pulling the skin off if its not entirely ready.

ok thanks i will soak her for a couple days and see how it goes.

How old and how big is the snake? The time between milky eyes and shed can vary depending on size. Four days may be just a touch early in some cases.

It may just be the case that she has rubbed her tail a little too hard on something and lifted the old skin a little prematurely. If you try to remove it manually you could end up doing harm to your snake if it isn't quite time for the skin to come off. A good indicator that it is too early is if you look at the new skin and it looks wrinkly or kind of scarred/burnt.

Stuck shed is not an immediate problem, wait about a week. If the shed starts to lift in patches then put her in a wet pillow case (make sure it stays warm) for a day and that will bring most of the remaining shed off. Then check for retained eye caps and remove with scotch tape.

Pillow case works but you have to be careful that air can still get in the. Being that the pillow case if wet it can stop air getting in = BAD so just be careful if you use this method

I've never had a problem of a snake suffocating in a wet bag. Wet is probably the wrong word, the bag should be damp. It shouldn't be done for more than 24 hours anyway.

She is about 13 months old and is 140 gms. Ok so no need to worry for a week or so.

You do have a small buffer zone to sort this out easily. Considering the age and size of your snake wait 3-5 days and reassess. One more thing i would do, considering your location, is use as big of a water bowl as you can to up the humidity to help with any future shedding problems.

alright will do thanks mate.

also should i mist her or would the water bowl be enough?

found a shed this morning so there was no need to worry =p
