Hi I was every ones opinion on this..

I want to get turtles, since its nearly impossible to get Hatchling Macleays in my area of in Australia, I am forced to get Murrays but I am only limited to a 4 ft tank and wont be able to get a pond..

Do you think I should not get a turtle for its own good?

well some take years to grow full by then i might have my own house :S but i want one but it would be cruel if it was quished in a small tank:(if some one knows a macleay breeder in Newcastle, NSW PM me :)

you shouldnt get one if you cant aford to keep it, just like buying a puppy and taking it to the pound when it grows up because its to big.

Freight is only around $50.

You should have no problems keeping a couple of murrays in a 4 ft Tank for at least a few years.
I do know people that keep Adult Murrays in 4ft tanks and they seem to thrive, so long as all the basics are provided , food,Uv,Calcium etc

If you get them as hatchlings it should be ok
But murrys grow to be massive, you could only keep one fully grown murry in a four foot rank realestically

But, it would be good if I got 2 macley hatclings, male and female.. then i could try breed aswell..

does any one know a macleay breeder?

hav a look around on sites on the net. like reptile sites. lots of places out there, you never know ur luck
i have a murray river and he has a 4 foot tank. and i would only ever just have him in it, but i also have 2 saw shelled babys and they will be going outside into a pond......just gotta build it. lol

As if said to you before mate
sexing hatchlings is almost impossible, I breed turtles and i have no idea of what sex they are untill they reach around 6 months
some even longer

Finding Maclays is bloody hard, i live in victoria and are a member of several reptile sites and associations, and have only heard of one person to ever breed them. I can try and track down their contacts, but be prepared, Turtles in general are alot more expensive here in victoria, and then you will have to freight,
For those who know turtles, to give you an idaea of prices
if you want a murry short neck your looking at 150 dollars
if you want a common long neck your looking at 100-120 dollars
and if you can track down a broad shell or saw shell your looking at 250-300 dollars each

consider that 2 Maclays could set you back over 500 dollors if you were to freight from melbourne. and get back to me

Hope that helped

so if you find a turtle... they live for years - Some over 40 years in captivity (maybe even more). I don't think you will limit it to a 4 footer all of its life (is that a fair assumption?).

So go ahead and adapt as the turtle grows... I had two terrapins in NZ... They loved their 4 footer till it broke... hehe... So I upgraded to a slatted 6 footer... Was the best thing I could do! They grew and grew and grew... but I had to sell em :(

I have the same dillemma! I want to get a turtle but we rent our property so wont ever be able to build a pond.... I was under the impression that certain breeds do stay small enough to be housed indoors...but I'm not sure.. Would love to find out for certain though..

Yeah Tatelina the Macleays are the smallest turtle in Oz, U can keep an adult pair in a 4x2x2 fish tank. However they are hard to come across.

hi Benan, i also live in Newcastle have you tried The Gates of Eden at Morisset,Shane is the man you need to ask for he is very helpful. If he doesn't breed them himself chances are he can put you in contact with someone who does 49733858 good luck mate
