How do I work out how big vents should be ? bank will house beardys, blueis and Darwin (re organised) and each enclosure has 100watt blacklight for heat running off one thermostat in the top. bank is melamine and vents will be in back wall, facing the wall.
Im planning on one on each hot side (bottom) and one on each cool side (top) any hints?
:D p.s same bank as in prev recent threads, roughly 3x2x2 give or take.

And I thought the "show us" thing had covered almost everything lol When I saw this I couldn't believe what you were wanting people to post on here! hehehe ..............now I realise it's those sort of vents :p

The sink strainers from Bunnings are cheap, easy to install, and I reckon look good! But hey, that's my opinion :D Keep in mind that the glass in the front allows a reasonable airflow anyhow. I have these strainers placed on the bottom of the enclosure also.

Cheers,
Luke

There are no rules really, I just put in the biggest I have but as has been said the sliding doors provide a fair amount of flow. I think in my 3x2x2 I used one on the back about 300mmx160mm.

Yeah one each end is fine, for me because I am currently setting up my new reptile room I intend having wall to wall banks of cages and vents on the back are the only real option. Just make sure there is room for some air movement or it's a waste of time. I know that sounds obvious but I see it all the time.

Dan,
Are you sure that by running them all off one thermostat that the temps will be OK? I would have thought that you'd want about 33 hot end for Darwins (having never kept one though) and at least 45 degree hot end for the Beardies....wouldn't that be too big a difference to achieve?

Maybe someone else with experience running banks like this can help. By the way Netty said they're going great guns too....glad you guys love 'em so much....obviously a good home to go to.

I just screwed them in Inny. Because I'd used 18mm MDF sheeting to build the enclosure I needed 2 strainers for each hole lol the outside ones I glued on using a construction adhesive, but the inside ones I screwed on with stainless steel self tapping screws :)

I know holes are cheaper to drill, but the Stainless vents look a heck of a lot cooler IMO hehehe

Will do. I think when this bank is done it'll add up to about $350/$400 totall cost, still a pretty good saving by any measure for a similar bank. Anyone have an idea what a fully done like mine might cost to buy? Ive seen some pretty exxy ones about!

Yeah i did think of that too Si, will likley pick up two more herpshop thermostats, I figure the bluies will be fine with 33 hot, 28 cool there pretty hardy, on the other hand those thermos are cheap enough, just dont know where ill mount the black boxes, all on top maybe. For that reason I decided too leave the shingle in his current enclosure (temp/hum) being far diff, likes it hot n dry.
Beardies going well, growing fast now, munching pinkies and reluctantly some dog food in their diet
along with the greens etc.
p.s the back is that pegbourd stuff but without the holes Moose, was just gonna drill holes?? dont know how itll go, seems pretty sturdy, but i have some more 19 mm melamine i might replace the back yet, well see.

Sorry I didn't read what you wrote properly Inny - I see you are referring to bank vents - Sorry! I saw the title and thought of something stupid to say - it doesn't take too much for me to get offtrack! Just ignore me!

instar ive never kept animals any where but qld but nearly very enclosure i do now i have a full peg borad back i believe the more air move ment the better but our climate is different to yours but i suppose you guys need to keep some heat as you have much colder weather in winter than us

I was about to say a similar thing longtom.
Instar: Unless your house has central heating, or you have a heater warming the room, if the temps at night get really cold then I don't imagine pegboard would hold much heat.

:p

Hix

yeah hixs we can keep heaps of animals out doors up here alyear round if ive got animals on my veranda i just give them a low watt heat pad though winter no need for a thermosatt cant over heat if enclosers well ventalated i think some people accidently make there cages so they say to hot for to long

Sorry I should have explained better. The back is made of the same material as pegbourd but no holes....yet! It will be in a warm room though, im going with the sink strainer idea, just one in each enclosure to provide some flow.

Your so lucky Inny, i was about to post a pic of a butt until i read what vents you were seeking.

Simone.

Hey vents are stupidly priced.

IMHO the cheapest way to do them is to route in suitably slim slots but the Moose's idea has merit.

The enclosure I tiled came that way:

and painted red - They look great!!

try this place to get ya vents!

http://www.prestigegroup.net.au/hardware_catalogue/vents_and_accessories.htm

I buy direct from them to make all my snake enclosures. Even with the very large enclosures i build i still use the small 5x8 vents. one inside one outside, no screws, just liquid nails (or a builders alternative at 1/4 the price)
usually for something about 1000mm long will put 4 vents on the back wall totally 8 vents back and front.

want pics?

'Edit'
Im having a shocker tonight.......I use the 5x3, not 5x8. lucky we have this edit function!!
Blame bundy bear!! its all his fault.....
