Hi all,

I've been having a think about starting a small silkworm colony, just a question though.
What do you feed yours, when the mulberry leaves die off?
I have a mulberry tree so getting the leaves isn't a problem and I've read you can put the leaves in the fridge with silkworms in there at 5c to slow down their Metabolism so they slow down a bit right?

Thanks guys

Nugget:)

if you can get silk worms to breed all year round i praise you
and please contact me
you will find silkworms are seasonal and are not breed all year round

just got a reply from aussiesilkworms, they should have silkworm chow within a month as its been ordered

now we can breed silkworms year round

Every time iv ptu them in a fridge they have died within a couple of hours
Does any one have a particular method?

lol, killer you can not put the worms in the fridge....they will die

you must be thinking of mealworms, you put them in the fridge and it slows them down heaps.

theres no way to slow a silkworm down other than feed it less

the faster you feed, the faster they grow

Yeah i thought so but i tried twice with a couple any way cos people kept telling otherwise
Thanks

well. we got ours 2 feed on some plant with a yellow flower (might b wattle, but not a bright as the wattle i'e seen), and i have heard that they can feeed on lettuce, but make sure if u feed them on lettuce, they haven't eaten any mulberry leaves.

silkworms can eat anything for about a week, then things turn ugly

you can feed lettuce as a substitute only if u are out of leaves
i heard lettuce poisons them after a few weeks and i have tried it
my worms died after a couple of weeks :(

i hear beatroot leaves are fine for silkworms and makes their silk turn red, but the leaves are hard to find in large numbers

that site mentioned before
How to Make Silkworm Chow - wikiHow
i dont think that would work because in silkworm chow there is a lot of different minerals and vitamend etc.....

mulberry leaves are the way to go!
