My pond has had an explosion of snails. I really want to control them cause they are eating all of my pretty lilies and lotus and all my other plants. I've been told that getting a turtle will keep them at bay but then the turtle will eat all of my plants as well. Does anyone know if there are any fish that can keep them down? Or maybe a chemical control?

Mate i'm doing research, that's why i'm asking people for info. Even if there are purely carnivorous turtles availabel to me they still crawl all over the plants which will do more damage to them than the snails would have.

sorry, didnt mean that the wrong way, pm expansa1 he will set you in the right direction but i wouldnt think an eastern long-neck would damage your plants much

Ive kept turts for years and years

Go for an Eastern Long neck, pretty rare for them to eat plants, will take care of your snail issue though LOL
Dont get amurry river short neck though, as they will eat plants

PIM craig though hes the best when it comes to turts

Most short necks will eat alot of plants as adults, so dont get them. As far as i know all, the long necks are completely carnivorous unless starving.

At the same time short necks would eat alot more snails than long necks. Long necks may possibly burrow into the roots to get a good ambush position maybe?

I would get an eel tailed catfish they will clean them up a lot faster IMO, there are alot of varieties that could survive up where you are too, some smaller species would be able to breed in your pond probably too. They do suck up some ground material but a smaller one shouldnt bother the plants.

How big are the snails?

You can buy snail rid from most aquariums and it is harmless to plants and fish.

mayb a blue tongue that likes swimming will help u out

I have no idea of what type of snails they are, just ones that like eating plants lol. Think i'm going to go for a combination of a chemical and fish. Have found out clown loaches apparently do a good job and i already have some eel tail catfish in there, if they are still alive. Thanks for the ideas guys.

What do they look like? Spiral shape? Round? Small? Large? Clownloaches won't due well unless the water is a constant 26C and i find they don't eat all type of snails.

Well the snails i've found are about the size of your finger nail and the shape of a normal garden snail, except the hole where they stick their body out of is slightly off centre. Well that sucks about the loaches, i like the look of them too.
