Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out the snake catching system in regards to licencing over here in western australia. I've just moved to perth from melbourne where it was fairly straight forward, just give them money and away you go.

The closest thing I've found to it is the application for a regulation 15 licence: Fauna licensing - Department of Environment and Conservation

Regards,

Andrew

You have to do a DEC approved course in able to be able to get your reg 17 in WA. Brian Bush, Mitch Ladyman, Gary Davis, Bob Browne-Cooper are some of them. There are only a few.

I think you can just have a written reference. If it's from somewhere reputable. Maybe a zoo or something... Unless the form is out of date...
  1. Provide at least one written reference and/or copy of any certification pertaining to the applicant’s reptile capture/handling ability.

I did a snake catching course 3 years ago and did snake catching for 3 summers in Victoria. Mind you I realise that I'll be dealing with different species but I'm sure I'll figure it out :)

thanks for the link snowman. Was looking for relocation. I really like the fact that there's no fee payable! I'll just chuck in some photo copies of my previous licences for the last 3 years and my training certificate the course I did in vic.

If you still have the certificates from the courses you did in Vic, send a photocopy of each one with the application into DEC and they should approve it.
If not get in contact with Gary Davies www.westaussiereptiles.com.au and sign up for one of his courses.
Over places that do snake courses (excluding Armadale reptile center) use buckets and snakes that are less than 1m so they don’t jump out the bucket in the courses...

I'd consider doing a course, but that would be mainly to familiarise myself with the local species. In victoria I mainly dealt with tiger snakes and eastern browns. Don't suppose the species around perth (tigers, dugites) would be too different.
