im getting ready to move my python out of a click/clack and into a enclosure but with the mesh over the heat light it still gets very hot, will the snake try and touch the mesh and get burnt or anything?

Most likely, yes. They're not the smartest of animal and will probs wrap around the cage if possible. Have u tried reducing the wattage?

another thing to do would be to use a heatmat or heatpanel on the bottom of the enclosure and/or the side if you need to provide warm area and don't trust using the cage. :)
best of luck.

Hey Mate,

From experience you should be right. all my snakes have their heat lamps on the other side of mesh and the mesh gets very hot! Im guessing they can feel the heat and stay clear or have touched it a few times and have learnt to stay away. either way the snakes should be fine i doubt they would put continually put them selves in a situation that would harm them.

please correct me if i'm wrong guys.

cheers,

ah you all beat me to it. all my snakes seem to avoid the hot mesh, having said that the mesh is the flat mesh on the top or side of enclosure so its not a mesh guard around a light for them to wrap around.

not too sure mate but be sure to use a thermostat for your heating elements.
try and use a low wattage bulb like a 50-60w also.

Yep this is my exact set up atm. In my opinion Thermostats are a crucial piece of equipment for reptile keeping. :)

Try reducing the wattage. It only needs to be warm enough to get a nice basking spot, that's all, so try to go as low as possible while doing that.

i have a thermostat and a flat mesh under the light but for now she is in a medium enclosure with just a heatmatt, but once she goes into her large enclosure she will have the heatlamp.

Nah you should be all good after all they can sence heat at worst case sinario it will touch it for a split second and it'll learn it's lesson

A lot of people use cages that are too small. There is no point in using a cage if you can't put your own hand on it with out getting burnt. Get a bigger cage.

If a snake can coil around a heat cage or similar barrier, there is every chance it will get burnt sooner or later if the mesh is too hot. Snake have diiferent heat sensors in their skin compared humans and there is not the some reflex of pulling away from something hot. Google "reptile burns" and check it out if you think it does not happen. They cannot coil around the mesh on top of a cage so that represents much less of a hazard but may potentially still be a somewhat of a problem, depending. Like the previous post says, if you cannot hold your hand on it indefinitely, then the protective cage isn't protecting and needs to be bigger.

This is not necessarily true, nor is it necessarily good advice. Bluetongue pretty well nailed it.

Giving advise is great. But please make sure the advice you give is correct and that you have the relevant experience to give the right advice. Don't just comment for the sake of it.
The above advice will put people's pets in danger of being burnt.

In the past I've used dome shaped metal/wire baskets (vegie strainer or fruit baskets) as a heat guard. The fact that it's dome shaped means the snake has no leverage to wrap around them.

Plus they're alot cheaper.
