This photo was sent to me by a friend.

It was found in a wood heap in his back yard on the the coast just south of Newcastle. It regurgitated a skink soon after.

I thought possibly Cacophis krefftii - Southern Dwarf Crowned Snake??

And before everyone says "he shouldn't be handling a snake without knowing what it is" - I know that!!

try and get your friend to send a clearer photo, that one is just a brown blur!
(and I hope you told your mate the advice re handling snakes!) ;) or at least have a hospital nearby!

I thought possibly Dwyer's too but the whole head is dark rather than just the top. He also describes it as having racing stripes down the side of its head and a dark underside so could also be Hemiaspis signata - Marsh Snake too.

I'm now leaning towards a Marsh Snake

I'd go Marsh snake too! Greyish/ black belly and thin white lines around the lip are good features to look for.

Yep I'm going to go with Marsh Snake too. It was just the dark head I wasn't sure about but once he gave the racing stripes and dark belly description that confirmed it for me.
